  • The latest coronavirus update for the US as a whole is concerning, with cases on the rise at probably the worst possible time of the year -- but two states, in particular, are seeing especially disturbing COVID-19 trend lines right now.
  • Both North and South Dakota are seeing big surges in things like coronavirus cases and hospitalizations.
  • One reason this may be the case is that the Dakotas avoided the worst of the coronavirus outbreak early on, which may have fostered a feeling of complacency.

Any way you look at it, the latest coronavirus update for the US as a whole is that most of the country is rushing headlong in the wrong direction. In some states, though, the trend is merely worrisome. And then there are states like North and South Dakota, where the coronavirus numbers are skyrocketing to a degree not seen in much of the rest of the country.

As of the time of this writing, the US on the whole is seeing 22 cases per 100,000 people, while in South Dakota that number is 95 cases per 100,000 people. In North Dakota, it's even worse -- 105 per 100,000 people, which is a record, making North Dakota the first to report more than 100 cases for every 100,000 people, per a new Vox report.
