Scoring a new pair of noise-canceling earbuds doesn't always have to be an investment. In fact, there are plenty of budget-friendly options on the market that still have sophisticated features like smart ambient control and extra-long battery life. The good news is there's one such pair on sale today.
JBL Tune 230 noise-cancelling earbuds are on sale today at Amazon for just $59.95. That takes the list price of $99.95 down $40, or 40%. While we've seen these earbuds drop to a lower price before, this is still its second-lowest price on record, making it an excellent value buy.
These earbuds are a great pick for work and everyday use: while noise-canceling technology works to keep the outside world from getting in, features like Ambient Aware and TalkThru make these earbuds adaptable to the demands of everyday life. You can stay abreast with what's going on around you, and even stop for a conversation without having to fumble with removing your earbuds. Plus, these earbuds have four different microphones to make sure your voice calls are as clear as they are convenient.
Act on this deal while you can and get a pair of JBL Tune 230 noise-cancelling earbuds for just $59.95.

OpenAI and Google will be required to notify the government about AI models
![US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo speaking into a microphone](https://helios-i.mashable.com/imagery/articles/02gu8WT1sQ9klDa4rY6cQMz/hero-image.jpg)
OpenAI, Google, and other AI companies will soon have to inform the government about developing foundation models, thanks to the Defense Production Act. According to Wired, US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo shared new details about this impending requirement at an event held by Stanford University's Hoover Institute last Friday.
"We're using the Defense Production Act... to do a survey requiring companies to share with us every time they train a new large language model, and share with us the results—the safety data—so we can review it,” said Raimondo.
The new rules are part of President Biden's sweeping AI executive order announced last October. Amongst the broad set of mandates, the order requires companies developing any foundation model "that poses a serious risk to national security, national economic security, or national public health and safety," to notify the federal government and share the results of its safety testing. Foundation models are models like OpenAI's GPT-4 and Google's Gemini that power generative AI chatbots. However, GPT-4 is likely below the threshold of computing power that requires government oversight.
Future foundation models, ones that have unprecedented computing power, are the main concern because of their massive potential national security risk. That's why this mandate falls in the territory of the Defense Production Act, which was last invoked in 2021 by President Biden to increase the production of pandemic-related protective equipment and supplies.
At the event, Raimondo also addressed another aspect of the executive order which would require US cloud computing providers like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft to disclose foreign use of their services.
"We’re beginning the process of requiring US cloud companies to tell us every time a non-US entity uses their cloud to train a large language model," said Raimondo, per Bloomberg.
The secretary of commerce didn't disclose when these requirements would go into effect. But an announcement is expected very soon since the deadline is today, Jan. 28.

It's the last week to book a one-way Southwest flight for just $39
![southwest airplane flying in the sky](https://helios-i.mashable.com/imagery/articles/06HXKfDQanIZ2Xbelk4fNmd/hero-image.jpg)
Score cheap flights: Southwest's "Wanna Get Away" sale has select one-way Southwest flights starting at just $39, with travel valid from Feb. 12 to May 22. You'll want to book sooner rather than later though — your last chance to lock in this deal is Jan. 25 at 11:59 p.m. PT.
![southwest logo](https://helios-i.mashable.com/imagery/articles/06HXKfDQanIZ2Xbelk4fNmd/images-1.fill.size_256x98.v1705938732.jpg)
We're officially in the swing of the new year, and if a few weeks back at the grind has you ready for a vacation, Southwest has got you covered.
With their aptly named "Wanna Get Away" sale, Southwest is offering select one-way flights starting at just $39, for travel between Feb. 12 and May 22. Technically the promo is valid from Feb. 6, but you have to purchase your flights 21 days in advance, so if you book today, Jan. 22, the first available day is Feb. 12. Your last day to book is Thursday, Jan. 25 by 11:59 p.m. PT, so if you want to lock in a cheap flight, this is the time.
A $39 flight, even if one way, is a solid deal — even if you booked a two one-way flights to cover a round trip, it'd cost you under $85. So what's the catch? Certain seats and markets are limited, and this rate may apply to nonstop or connecting flights. And while you can travel from February to May, you are limited to traveling on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
If you're willing to work with those parameters, you can save a ton on your travel this spring. Again, just remember to book before Jan. 25 if you want to take advantage of this deal.

How to reopen closed tabs
![A MacBook sitting on a table](https://helios-i.mashable.com/imagery/articles/07BlOnsHy4M3RCw61DaH3sK/hero-image.jpg)
Confused about how to reopen closed tabs? When you accidentally close a tab you’re not done with, it can be a little irritating. Luckily, learning how to reopen closed tabs is a simple, easy-to-remember process.
There’s no need to painstakingly try to recall which website or article was in that accidentally closed tab. Instead, Chrome offers three built-in methods for reopening closed tabs — and each one takes only a few seconds.
Method 1: The Ctrl + Shift + ‘T’ shortcut
The easiest and fastest way to reopen closed tabs in Chrome is with a keyboard shortcut. Hold down both the Ctrl key and the Shift Key, and then press the ‘T’ key to reopen your last closed tab.
![Lenovo keyboard](https://helios-i.mashable.com/imagery/articles/07BlOnsHy4M3RCw61DaH3sK/images-2.fill.size_2000x1125.v1705938960.jpg)
You can continue pressing the ‘T’ key while holding the Ctrl and Shift keys to continue opening more previously closed tabs. Once you have this shortcut memorized, reopening a closed tab in Chrome only takes a second.
If Chrome closes out entirely, or your laptop restarts, you can often open Chrome and use the Ctrl + Shift + ‘T’ shortcut to reopen all of the tabs in your last browsing session.
Method 2: Right-click above the address bar
If you don’t want to memorize the keyboard shortcut above, or you’d like to use your mouse to reopen a closed tab, this is the method for you.
![Screenshot of Mashable](https://helios-i.mashable.com/imagery/articles/07BlOnsHy4M3RCw61DaH3sK/images-3.fill.size_2000x1125.v1705938960.jpg)
No matter how many tabs you have open, there will always be a little bit of blank space to the right of your right-most tab. Right-click on this empty space next to the tab and choose ‘Reopen closed tab’ from the pop-up menu.
This opens your last closed tab, so if you’re looking for an older tab, you’ll need to repeat this process a few times or use the next method.
Method 3: Check your browsing history
If you’re looking for a specific tab, and you’ve recently closed a lot of tabs, it can often be easier to check your browsing history for a link instead. Press the Ctrl key and the ‘H’ key to quickly pull up your Chrome browser history.
![Check your browsing history](https://helios-i.mashable.com/imagery/articles/07BlOnsHy4M3RCw61DaH3sK/images-1.fill.size_2000x1125.v1705938960.jpg)
Your browsing history is divided by date or by group. When using the “By date” tab to view history, you’ll see every opened URL since you last cleared your browsing history. Using the “By group” tab, you can see your last search terms with a few unique URLs to click on.
While the Ctrl + Shift + ‘T’ method is the quickest, knowing how to find an old link in your browsing history is helpful for finding your 15th-last closed tab or locating a recipe you came across a few days ago.

iPhone 16 tipped to have new 'capture button': 3 things it can do
![iPhone 15 Pro on a table](https://helios-i.mashable.com/imagery/articles/02yyP4GydF4s9sEy2tYYuUQ/hero-image.jpg)
The iPhone 16 is reportedly getting a new capture button, a dedicated feature that lets you take photos and videos more conveniently, according to The Information.
As The Verge pointed out, this rumor aligns with scuttlebutt from MacRumors, which claims the new camera-focused button will be located on the same side as the power button, but placed slightly lower on the device's edge.
![iPhone 15 Pro and iPone 15 Pro Max on a table](https://helios-i.mashable.com/imagery/articles/02yyP4GydF4s9sEy2tYYuUQ/images-1.fill.size_2000x1125.v1705681059.jpg)
3 things the 'capture button' can do
As mentioned, the capture button will reportedly be positioned on the lower-right edge of the iPhone 16. As such, if you were to turn the device to landscape mode, it should conveniently sit under your index finger, making it easy to snap photos and capture videos.
What can it do? Here are three features the new capture button may offer:
1. Pressure sensitivity
MacRumors claims that the capture button won't be a traditional, mechanical one. It will, instead, be capacitive. In other words, it won't operate like a typical button that succumbs to pressure and hits an actuation point before running a function.
It will reportedly detect your touch and provide haptic feedback, similar to the Home Button on the iPhone SE series.
The Information disagrees, adding that the new capture button has both capabilities. It's a button that can be pushed, but it responds to touch gestures, too, like swiping left and right.
2. Zoom in and out
Using swiping gestures on the capture button reportedly lets you take close-up shots for photos and lets you zoom in while shooting videos.
3. Bring images into focus
If the user presses lightly on the capture button, it supposedly bring subjects into focus on the viewfinder. By pressing more firmly, however, users can activate the shutter button.
Final thoughts
iPhone 15 Pro models made a splash with a well-received new action button that lets users customize and program the button with apps and tasks that make their lives more seamless and efficient.
The action button is now expected to be featured on all iPhone 16 models. In the same way that the action button was limited to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, I expect the rumored new capture button to be featured on only the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.

New AirPods Pro with ‘Year of the Dragon’ engraving are here. But there’s a catch.
![AirPods Pro with Year of the Dragon engraving](https://helios-i.mashable.com/imagery/articles/02vLsLL3qsNZyFsFEzEJjH1/hero-image.png)
Apple is selling some really cool-looking AirPods Pro right now, but you may not be able to buy them.
According to MacRumors, there's a swanky new AirPods Pro model made to celebrate the imminent Lunar New Year in February, which will kick off the Year of the Dragon. There's no functional difference between these AirPods Pro and the ones you may have bought last year, but there is an important aesthetic difference: There's a cool dragon engraving on the charging case.
And now for the bad news. These AirPods are only on sale in east and southeast Asia, specifically in China, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Macao, Singapore, Taiwan, and South Korea.
Maybe you can find a way to import them to the U.S., or maybe you already live in one of those places and can buy them the regular way. If not, though, you may have to just admire them from afar. It's one unfortunate thing (on a very long list) about living in the U.S.: We don't always get the coolest time-limited merch.

Guy Ritchie's 'The Gentlemen' series gets its first star-studded teaser
![A man in a suit stands beside a pool table.](https://helios-i.mashable.com/imagery/videos/01cDlDPhFoxdSaiFbH7K1iN/hero-image.jpg)
If you're not quite done with messed up British aristocracy tales, Guy Ritchie has expanded his 2019 film The Gentlemen into a Netflix series, and the first teaser has dropped.
Ritchie created, co-wrote, and executive produced the series, as well as directed the first two episodes. Essentially, the series is set "in the world" of the film, but doesn't have any of the original characters. The White Lotus' Theo James leads the TV show as Eddie Horniman, who inherits his father's enormous country estate — with strings. Eddie soon learns it's connected to a rather sizeable crime empire and all the rivals that go with it, so he's pulled into the game.
Giancarlo Esposito, Kaya Scodelario, Vinnie Jones, Daniel Ings, Joely Richardson, Peter Serafinowicz, Chanel Cresswell, Dar Salim, Michael Vu, Max Beesley, Jasmine Blackborow, Pearce Quigley, Ruby Sear, and Harry Goodwins also star, and Ray Winstone has just been revealed as part of the cast too (he's in the trailer).

Didn't get the Apple Watch you hoped for over the holidays? Or maybe you missed out on some of the great prices the smartwatches went for on Black Friday and beyond. If you're still hunting for a great Apple Watch deal, now's the perfect time to invest in the newest model as it's currently back down to its Cyber Weekend price.
As of Jan. 12, the Apple Watch Series 9 is just $329 at Amazon, down from its usual price of $399. That's $70 off and a discount of 18%. As of the time of writing, that price applies to the 41mm GPS model in the Midnight Aluminum Case with Midnight Sport Loop, Silver Aluminum Case with Winter Blue Sport Loop, Pink Aluminum Case with Light Pink Sport Loop, and Starlight Aluminum Case with Starlight Sport Loop colorways.
The Series 9 is a worthy upgrade, despite mostly iterative changes, as Mashable reviewer Stan Schroeder found it a "robust and elite wearable device." He praised it for its "serious power" thanks to its S9 SiP and Ultra Wideband chip, as well as its souped-up peak brightness of up to 2000 nits.
While the Double Tap feature is an interesting addition that uses a simple pinching of your index finger and thumb to perform actions, Schroeder appreciated the Series 9's zippier speed and improved battery life even more, as well as the improved Neural Engine that assists with processing Siri's tasks on the watch itself.
If you're ready for an upgrade or you just want to pick up the latest Apple Watch for yourself, this is a great time to do it. Just be sure to snag yours before they sell out.

The Clicks iPhone keyboard case reminds me of my old BlackBerry
![Clicks mobile accessory](https://helios-i.mashable.com/imagery/articles/03heo6X7LIXJOpOS3hh0gj0/hero-image.jpg)
Today's phones are zippier, larger, smarter, and more powerful, arguably making them better than the phones of the distant past. But there's one thing — in my opinion — that has gotten worse: typing.
Whether I'm typing on the iPhone 15 Pro Max or the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra (I'm a tech reviewer so I'm often juggling several phones), the typing experience isn't optimal. I miss the days of the physical keyboard, Ã la the once-popular Sidekick or BlackBerry Curve, which made it easier for my fingers to fly while texting.
We thought we just had to grin and bear it. After all, it's a trade-off of having a slick touchscreen. However, it seems like the days of just "dealing with it" are over, thanks to a new mobile accessory.
![Clicks mobile accessory](https://helios-i.mashable.com/imagery/articles/03heo6X7LIXJOpOS3hh0gj0/images-1.fill.size_2000x1333.v1704399321.jpg)
'Clicks' adds a keyboard to your iPhone
Clicks is billed as new keyboard accessory that "brings a real keyboard to iPhone," according to the press release.
It solves three problems:
-
The awkwardness of typing on a touchscreen with poor tangibility
-
The invasiveness of virtual keyboards that take up too much screen real estate
-
Not having access to keyboard shortcuts (e.g., CMD + A for Select All)
With Clicks snapped to your iPhone, you can now enjoy a physical keyboard that reportedly feels more natural. Plus, you get more screen real estate and you can use shortcuts like "CMD + H" to pull up the Home Screen and "CMD + H" to launch Search.
"We use keyboards on our desktops, laptops and tablets every day - so it's kind of odd that we abandoned physical buttons on the smartphone," said Clicks co-founder Michael Fisher, a YouTube tech reviewer with 1.2 million subscribers. "Clicks brings the tactility and precision of a physical keyboard to iPhone, so people don't have to wait until they get back to their desks to create or communicate with the satisfying feedback only real buttons can provide."
Clicks is the first product from Clicks Technology, a new company launched with Fisher (also known as MrMobile) and Kevin Michaluk (also known as Crackberry Kevin).
Clicks can connect to your iPhone via Lightning or USB-C. It's available for pre-order now at Clicks.tech with a price of $139 (USD). It will begin shipping Feb. 1.

CES 2024: This laptop's weird touchpad is for YouTube-obsessed users
![Acer Swift Go 14 touchpad](https://helios-i.mashable.com/imagery/articles/02ZdmPGAbiQXbCCrZf8ahbr/hero-image.jpg)
The Acer Swift Go 14 is now unleashed ahead of CES 2024, and at first glance, it may seem like your average laptop.
It's got the ever-so-popular silver chassis and a clamshell form factor — what's the big deal about it? Well, something curious happens to the touchpad when you fire up YouTube on the Swift Go 14.
The Swift Go 14's funky touchpad
While you're watching YouTube on a laptop, and you need to pause it to grab some lunch, why go through the arduous journey of dragging the cursor all the way to the pause button? Your poor pointer finger shouldn't have to go through such a strenuous task.
That's why Acer, coddling our first-world problems, decided to place media controls on top of the touchpad. In other words, the trackpad doubles as a hub for play, pause, rewind, and fast-forward buttons.
The best part is that the Swift Go 14 can automatically detect whether media is playing on the display. So it's not just YouTube these LED-lit controls will appear for — it should pop up for sites like Spotify, Twitch, and other media platforms.
![Acer Swift Go 14's touchpad](https://helios-i.mashable.com/imagery/articles/02ZdmPGAbiQXbCCrZf8ahbr/images-1.fill.size_2000x1125.v1704091649.jpg)
I got to test the Swift Go 14 at an Acer showcase. The touchpad lit up with the integrated media controls when I fired up YouTube, allowing me to hit pause, play, and skip without a hitch.
![Woman holding the Acer Swift Go 14 on her lap](https://helios-i.mashable.com/imagery/articles/02ZdmPGAbiQXbCCrZf8ahbr/images-2.fill.size_2000x1125.v1704091649.jpg)
However, when I tried to pull up other sites besides YouTube (e.g., Twitch), the controls didn't show up. However, Acer stressed that I was experimenting with a pre-production model and the units bound for store shelves will work as marketed. Once we get the Swift Go 14 in for testing, we'll know for sure.
12-hour battery life?
The Swift Go 14, equipped with the new Intel Core Ultra processors that are designed to improve AI workflow performance, can reportedly deliver 12.5 hours of battery life. (Again, this is yet another claim I'll have to test in our lab once Mashable receives a review unit.)
![Woman holding the Acer Swift Go 14](https://helios-i.mashable.com/imagery/articles/02ZdmPGAbiQXbCCrZf8ahbr/images-3.fill.size_2000x1125.v1704091650.jpg)
It comes with up to 32GB of RAM and up to 2TB of SSD storage. While all configurations offer a 14-inch display, you can choose the panel you want, from a 1920 x 1200-pixel IPS screen with a 60Hz refresh rate to a 2880 x 1880-pixel OLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate.
It comes with a 1440p webcam, and from what I saw at the showcase, it features a microSD card slot, a headset jack, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, two USB Type-A ports, a Kensington lock slot, and an HDMI port.

The Swift Go 14 will be available in March and has a starting price of $749.99.

On Threads, users say they're flooded with pro-life and transphobic posts
![A man on his phone with a shadow behind him.](https://helios-i.mashable.com/imagery/articles/02JoifSZ4YJrY3ATbq2RbOn/hero-image.jpg)
I haven't opened Threads, Meta's hopeful rival to X/Twitter, for months. But I did on the first day of 2024, and the app looked nothing like I would have imagined.
Throughout my feed, I saw posts that were transphobic, pro-life, anti-porn, and Islamophobic. I don't follow any of the accounts that post these threads; I haven't engaged with any of the content, apart from taking screenshots. And turns out, I'm not the only one whose Threads experience is being flooded with these kinds of posts.
![A screenshot from Threads.](https://helios-i.mashable.com/imagery/articles/02JoifSZ4YJrY3ATbq2RbOn/images-1.fit_lim.size_376x.jpg)
![A screenshot of a Threads post.](https://helios-i.mashable.com/imagery/articles/02JoifSZ4YJrY3ATbq2RbOn/images-2.fit_lim.size_376x.jpg)
On X, people have been posting about this since the end of December 2023 and the beginning of this year. One user wrote: "That Threads app is a chop. I logged into it for second time ever and it was nothing but INSANE right-wing, conservative foolishness about abortion and marriage and everything else." Another posted about their suggested timelines being "FILLED TO THE BRIM with anti-trans content".

In a statement to Mashable, Meta acknowledged that "some users" are being shown "this type of repetitive, low-quality content."
"We want people to have a positive experience on Threads, and we're continually making improvements to what people see on the app. In addition to removing content that violates our community guidelines, we're aware that some users are seeing this type of repetitive, low-quality content they may not be interested in, and we're taking steps to address it," said a Meta spokesperson.
At the time of writing this article, my suggested posts in Threads are of the same nature: that of hate speech. Posts that are against transgender rights and women's rights, as well as posts that attack marginalized people, appear rampant on the app for me and others.
![A screenshot of a post on Threads.](https://helios-i.mashable.com/imagery/articles/02JoifSZ4YJrY3ATbq2RbOn/images-3.fill.size_2000x1977.v1704470490.jpg)
Such posts are even being suggested via the Instagram app. On my feed, I have been directed to Threads multiple times, with posts that are homophobic, racist, or hateful in some capacity.
![A screenshot of a suggested Threads posts on Instagram.](https://helios-i.mashable.com/imagery/articles/02JoifSZ4YJrY3ATbq2RbOn/images-4.fill.size_2000x1515.v1704474120.jpg)
Threads, which launched in early July 2023, was accused of having a hate speech problem around a week after it went live. Several civil rights groups, including nonprofit watchdog group Media Matters for America, the Center for Countering Digital Hate, and GLAAD, criticized the app for insufficient guardrails against violence and disinformation. A letter to Meta from the groups accused the platform of supporting "neo-Nazi rhetoric, election lies, COVID and climate change denialism, and more toxicity."
The app still does not have its own Terms of Use or Community guidelines. Instead, Meta says the app is "specifically part of Instagram, so the Instagram Terms of Use and the Instagram Community Guidelines" also apply to Threads. Instagram's Community Guidelines note that the app removes content "that contains credible threats or hate speech, content that targets private individuals to degrade or shame them, personal information meant to blackmail or harass someone, and repeated unwanted messages."
Instagram also emphasizes hate speech is "never OK" — the company applies this to anyone who "attack[s] anyone based on race, ethnicity, national origin, sex, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, disabilities, or diseases." But the app also says it may allow hate speech if it is being shared "to challenge it or to raise awareness."
Meanwhile, parent company Meta defines hate speech as a "direct attack against people – rather than concepts or institutions – on the basis of what we call protected characteristics." This includes written or visual "expressions of contempt" and "self-admission to intolerance," such as Islamophobia and homophobia. However, the content users are being served on Threads appears to be falling under these very categories.
In a statement to Mashable back in July, Meta said, "Our industry leading integrity enforcement tools and human review are wired into Threads. Like all of our apps, hate speech policies apply," adding that the company is "considering additional ways to address misinformation in future updates." In December, Meta announced it's adding direct fact-checking into the Threads app; Mashable's Shannon Connellan reported the update aims "to address misinformation on the app itself instead of referentially through its other platforms."

Despite Meta's policies, it appears that Threads has a long way to go with its alleged hate speech problem on the platform. Users have taken to X, and Threads itself, all week to point out the kind of content being pushed toward them in their feeds — and nearly every time, the posts appear to be unwanted.

Apple pulls latest iOS 17.3 beta after reports of 'boot loop' bug
![iPhone installing an update](https://helios-i.mashable.com/imagery/articles/03F46VP7jxlvbaNtpoaqI6G/hero-image.jpg)
Apple has pulled the iOS 17.3 beta 2 update after reports of putting iPhones in a "boot loop."
The second iOS 17.3 beta was released on Tuesday of this week, and by Friday the update had been "withdrawn temporarily," according to the release notes. Spotted by Macworld, users who had installed the latest version of iOS 17.3 experienced an issue where the iPhone kept restarting without ever updating to the new system. The iPadOS 17.3 beta has also been pulled. The update no longer appears as a beta option in Software Updates.
Tweet may have been deleted
The release is expected to two new features called Stolen Device Protection and Apple Music collaborative playlists. Stolen Device Protection is a security feature that protects users if a thief learns their passcode. If the device is at an unknown location, it requires Face ID authentication to access sensitive information. This comes after reports of scammers peeking at people's passcodes in bars then taking their phones, per The Wall Street Journal.
If you've already installed the update, you can revert to the previous version by forcing a factory reset or entering Recovery Mode, which takes to you to the latest backup. In the meantime, keep an eye out for the de-bugged version of iOS 17.3 which will hopefully be rereleased soon.
