Elon Musk signals interest in creating a 'based' answer to ChatGPT

No comments :
Elon Musk

Just months after acquiring Twitter, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is now distracted by the newest shiny object: AI chatbots.

According to a new report from The Information, Musk is looking into creating an artificial intelligence research lab in order to develop his very own version of OpenAI's incredibly successful ChatGPT. The billionaire has reportedly already reached out to AI researchers for the project.

Igor Babuschkin, a former senior AI researcher at Google's Deepmind, is one such person that Musk contacted to lead his AI chatbot vision. Babuschkin confirmed to The Information that he had not yet agreed to work for Musk's project.

While there are not many details yet about Musk's potential AI project, the billionaire has been quite vocal with his criticisms of ChatGPT. Musk himself co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but has since completely cut ties with the company. He left OpenAI's board in 2018.

"OpenAI was created as an open source (which is why I named it "Open" AI), non-profit company to serve as a counterweight to Google, but now it has become a closed source, maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft," Musk tweeted on Feb. 17. "Not what I intended at all," he added.

Months earlier, Musk did heap some praise on ChatGPT while also warning about its future potential.

"ChatGPT is scary good," Musk said last year. "We are not far from dangerously strong AI."

One of Musk's primary critiques of ChatGPT, however, has been the safeguards programmed into the chatbot. For example, earlier this month, a "thought experiment" leveled at ChatGPT by a right wing writer sought to find out if the bot would deem it permissible to use racial slurs in order to stop a nuclear bomb. Being that the chatbot is not sentient and programmed to only answer in a certain way, ChatGPT replied that it was never okay to use a racial slur. Musk found it "concerning" that ChatGPT's refused to deem this hypothetical scenario as a morally acceptable use of a racial slur.

"The danger of training AI to be woke – in other words, lie – is deadly," Musk tweeted in December.

Based on Musk's ideological reasons for acquiring Twitter, his regular interactions with right wing Twitter users, his unbanning of previously suspended far right personalities and white supremacists, and – most recently – his defense of Dilbert creator Scott Adams, it's not hard to imagine what Musk's intent is in looking to create his own AI chatbot.

However, according to Babuschkin, Musk wasn't looking to create an AI chatbot in order to remove such safeguards.

Musk has seemingly confirmed that he's at least interested in an AI project in a series of tweets on Tuesday.

"BasedAI," Musk posted in one tweet before following up with a doge-related meme.

Will Musk's AI plans come to fruition? Or is this yet another instance of the billionaire failing to deliver? That obviously remains to be seen. But, as Gizmodo points out, Tesla's investors have already pleaded with Musk to stop wasting time on Twitter while Tesla subsequently tanks in value. Yet another time-consuming project for Musk is likely the last thing they want right now.

Apple hive, gather round for the best deals on Macs, iPads, iPhones and more as of Feb. 28.

  • BEST MAC DEAL: The MacBook Air (M2, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD) offers speed, portability, and an excellent keyboard — $1,299.99 $1,499 at Amazon (save $199.01)

  • BEST IPAD DEAL: The 2021 iPad (WiFi, 64GB), the best basic iPad for most people, is back down to its lowest price ever — $249.99 $329 at Target (save $79.01)

  • BEST IPHONE DEAL: The iPhone 13 Mini (64GB) at Verizon is a mini phone with plenty of storage space and a battery life worth bragging about — $0 on a new line with select 5G unlimited plans $599.99 (save up to $600)

  • BEST ACCESSORIES DEAL: The popular AirPods Max are finally back on sale and come with four free months of Apple Music — $499.99 $549 at Best Buy (save $49.01)

Apple may have an iron grasp on the general population, but when it comes down to it, their products look good, work well, and stay cutting-edge — so of course, people love 'em. Whether you build your calendar around Apple events or you just want solid tech no matter the brand, Apple's got you covered. Sure, they're a little notorious for their high prices, but we've rounded up the best deals on iPads, AirPods, MacBooks, and more to help you save where you can. Check them out below.

Mac and MacBook deals

Why we like it

Check out our full review of the M2 MacBook Air.

The M2 Air isn't the cheapest MacBook out there, nor is it the absolute most powerful. Instead, it sits somewhere in the middle, offering M2 power and a sizable amount of built-in storage, but it lacks an enviable refresh rate (and some ports, for that matter). Still, the sleek design makes it hard to distinguish it from the slightly more beefed-up Pro, and it has a keyboard that actually feels nice to type on. If you're rocking an older MacBook, the Air is a solid upgrade pick, and back down to its lowest price ever in the 512GB SSD configuration.

iPad deals

Why we like it

The best iPad for most people is still the classic one, and at the time of writing, it's nearly $200 cheaper than its next-gen counterpart. We like the 9th generation because it doesn't come with the bumped-up price of last fall's 10th gen release, instead keeping things firmly in the entry-level tablet range. Despite not being the latest iteration, it still has up to 10 hours of battery life, a 10.2-inch Retina display, and more than enough processing power to get you through most standard tasks.

Check out Mashable's official review of the iPhone 13 Mini.

The iPhone 14 may be the shiny new(ish) phone in Apple's lineup, but the iPhone 13 is by no means outdated. Unlike newer models, you won't need a trade-in to score some savings with this Verizon deal. It'll get you a free 13 mini if you open a new line at Verizon on an unlimited plan.

Why we like it

The Apple Watch deals were sparse last week, but this week, Best Buy has brought the Series 8 back down to its lowest price ever at $70. While it's not an essential upgrade, especially if you already have a Series 7 on your wrist, the latest gen does bring all the fitness features you've come to love, plus fertility tracking and crash detection.

The AirPods Max have taken the internet by storm thanks to their stand-out design, excellent audio quality, and ever-essential ANC. Get a Roomba S9+ and Braava Jet m6 for under $1,000 — plus more of today's best deals

No comments :
amazon air quality monitor, amazon halo band, and roomba bundle with pink background

We've rounded up the best deals we could find on Feb. 27 — here are some of our top picks:

February is almost over — and it's going out with a bang. Deals on Amazon smart home devices and robot vacuum and mop combos are taking the lead on Feb. 27, with an Amazon-owned Roomba bundle stealing the show.

Of course, there's more than just floor care and smart home gadgets to score at discounts today. Keep scrolling to shop our top picks for the best deals of the day.

Best floor care deal

Why we like it

As of Feb. 27, you can score one of the fanciest Roombas on the market, the S9+, bundled with the Braava Jet m6 robot mop for only $949. Not only is that the lowest price we've seen for this particular bundle deal, but it's also lower than the regular retail cost of the S9+ on its own. The S9+ is loud, but worth the price for its automated dirt disposal that "leaves you completely off the hook for weeks (months, actually) at a time," says Mashable's resident vacuum expert Leah Stodart. The Braava Jet m6 picks up where the robot vacuum leaves off, leaving you with freshly mopped floors. Snagging both of these floor-cleaning tools for less than $1,000 is a total steal in our books.

Best smart home deal

Why we like it

With a simple setup and a small form factor, the Amazon Smart air quality monitor is a pretty sweet addition to your home. It keeps tabs on things like particulate matter (PM 2.5), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon monoxide (CO), humidity, and temperature in your home, so you can breathe better air. Pair it with an Echo Show device for more detailed air quality readings or another Alexa-enabled device to create a routine and trigger an air purifier, dehumidifier, or fan to cut on at certain indoor air quality scores. At $49.99, it's on sale for 29% off — just a dollar shy of its lowest price to date.

That's $45 in savings on either option — you'll just need to enter the code HALOBANDFEB or HALOVIEWFEB at checkout to secure the deal. The Halo Band is screenless, while the Halo View is a more traditional fitness tracker. The Band gets you six free months of Halo membership so you can explore hundreds of workouts, sleep and nutrition programs, and the full suite of Halo tools and features. Love HBO's 'The Last of Us'? Here's where you can buy the video game that inspired it.

No comments :

UPDATE: Feb. 27, 2023, 10:00 a.m. EST This story has been updated with the latest availability info. Here are some quick links:

Translating a beloved video game franchise to TV or film is a famously dicey move. But HBO has done the almost-impossible with its adaptation of Naughty Dog's 2013 masterpiece The Last of Us, churning out an outstanding show with a stellar cast while staying true to the soul and mechanics of its source material. (Read Mashable entertainment reporter Belen Edwards' review for the full scoop.) In fact, the show has been such a hit that HBO decided to renew it for a second season.

If you're itching to boot up a PlayStation ahead of the first season finale on March 12, you're not alone: Some versions of the acclaimed third-person survival horror game and its sequel are selling out at major retailers. Here's a quick rundown of all your remaining buying options (in order of release date) and their online availability at the time of publication.

The Last of Us (2013)

A PS3 release, the original TLOU earned a slew of awards and quickly solidified itself as one of the greatest PlayStation exclusives to date. (Read our review from the Mashable archives.) It's best as a collector's item nowadays, since there are better-looking remasters and remakes available, but you can still play it if you've held onto an old console.

A few used copies were available on Amazon for around $73 when we last checked; you can also try your luck on eBay.

The Last of Us Remastered (2014)

Naughty Dog gave the game a minor facelift for the PS4 a year after launch in the form of TLOU Remastered. This one includes the single-player campaign in full 1080p with improved visuals, higher-res character models, and several gameplay updates, plus an expansion pack called The Last of Us: Left Behind that adds several chapters about Ellie's backstory. There are also two bonus maps for the game's Factions multiplayer mode — Reddit says it's still alive and kicking, for what it's worth.

PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers can download TLOU Remastered for free. Otherwise, you can snag a new copy through the PlayStation Store for $19.99. (It's completely sold out online at Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, Target, and Walmart.)

The Last of Us Part II (2020)

Set five years after Joel and Ellie's original post-apocalyptic journey out west, TLOU's grueling but gorgeous sequel lived up to players' astronomically high expectations, nabbing over 300 Game of the Year awards to become the most-awarded game in history. (It was only just dethroned by Elden Ring.) Note that the first season of the HBO series has already started dipping into its storyline (minorly) so consider grabbing a copy ASAP.

There are two editions available for the PS4, with a free performance patch for PS5:

Standard Edition

The base game of TLOU2 retails for $39.99, but you can get it on sale through the PlayStation Store for $24.79 until Thursday, March 2. (PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers will pay just $9.59, which is a new record-low price for this title.) It's currently sold out at Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, Target, and Walmart.

Digital Deluxe Edition

Upgrade to the Deluxe Edition through the PlayStation Store for a digital soundtrack, a mini digital art book, a dynamic theme for your console, and a set of six exclusive PSN avatars. It's on sale there for $34.99 until Thursday, March 2, which works out to a 30% savings. PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers save an additional $15.

The Last of Us Part I (2022)

Naughty Dog re-revisited the first TLOU game last year for a PS5 remake that features a complete visual overhaul and modernized gameplay with new controls, new enemy AI, enhanced combat, haptic feedback, 3D audio, and more accessibility options. (Psst: It's coming to PC on March 28, with preorders now available.) Like TLOU Remastered, it also includes the Left Behind single-player DLC.

Choose from two editions:

Standard Edition

You can score a free two-hour trial of the base game with a PS Plus Premium subscription, or buy it on sale through Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, Target, or Walmart for $49.99. (That's $20 off its MSRP.)

Digital Deluxe Edition

This version sets the player up for success with early unlocks of skill upgrades, weapon upgrades, weapon skins, a gameplay filter, and a speedrun mode. It's up for grabs in the PlayStation Store for $79.99.

Warner Bros. Discovery to sue Paramount over 'South Park' streaming rights

No comments :
south park characters cartman, kenny, kyle, and stan

HBO Max's parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, is suing Paramount for allegedly failing to honor part of their $500 million deal over the streaming rights to South Park, Variety reports.

The Warner/HBO and Paramount deal was sealed in 2019, when it was determined the popular animated comedy would stream exclusively on HBO Max. In 2021, however, MTV (a Paramount subsidiary) made a separate deal — for $900 million — with show creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone for at least five more seasons of the show for Comedy Central, and 14 original movies for Paramount+. Four of those “movies” have already run on Paramount+: South Park: Post Covid, South Park: Post Covid: The Return of Covid, South Park The Streaming Wars Part 1 and Part 2.

Now, Warner/HBO filed a suit on Friday that alleges that Paramount undermined their deal in attempts to bolster their own streaming service. "When Paramount decided to launch a new streaming platform of its own ("Paramount+"), its priorities changed drastically," the suit alleges, "and [Paramount] embarked on a multi-year scheme to unfairly take advantage of Warner/HBO by breaching its contract and stealing its content."

A Paramount Global spokesperson told Variety:

We believe these claims are without merit and look forward to demonstrating so through the legal process...We also note that Paramount continues to adhere to the parties' contract by delivering new South Park episodes to HBO Max, despite the fact that Warner Bros. Discovery has failed and refused to pay license fees that it owes to Paramount for episodes that have already been delivered, and which HBO Max continues to stream.

South Park is currently airing on HBO Max for its 26th season, with Warner Bros. Discovery considering the show an "anchor" that's "central to branding and marketing."

The latest Ninja Foodi is on sale, plus more of the best air fryer deals this week

No comments :
Person taking pizza out of Ninja Foodi toaster oven and air fryer

UPDATE: Feb. 24, 2023, 11:45 a.m. EST This story has been updated to reflect the latest air fryer deals at Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, and Target. Check out our top picks below:

Get a great deal on an air fryer to make your life just that much easier.

The internet has been talking your ear off about air fryers for years, and maybe you've finally decided to perform your own hype test — but not at full price, of course.

Whether you settle on a basic basket design, one that doubles as a toaster oven, or one that can replace a handful of countertop appliances depends on a few things: counter space, how many people you're cooking for, and how much you'll realistically use functions outside of air frying. We've separated these air fryers and multicookers by category below.

Basket-style air fryer deals

Why we like it

At the end of the day, air fryers are supposed to be easy to use, and the Cosori Pro LE is one of the easiest out there. The nine touch functions really let you set and forget your food (until it's ready, of course), while the basket can hold portions for up to four people. After you're done cooking, you can pop the basket in the air fryer. And when it's not in use, the minimalist design and tempered glass won't be an eyesore on your kitchen counter.

More deals on basket-style air fryers

Oven-style air fryer deals

Why we like it

The biggest drawback of oven-style air fryers is the kitchen real estate they take up. The Ninja Foodi oven air fryer provides a solution with easy flip-up storage, all while having the capacity to bake a 13-inch pizza, toast a couple of bagels, and air fry whatever foods your heart desires.

More deals on oven-style air fryers

Multicooker and grill combo deals

Why we like it

If you want an air fryer that's going to take pretty much all the guesswork out of cooking, this Ninja Foodi multicooker is the one. Its 8-quart interior not only gives you the space to cook an entire dinner in one batch, but also the functionality to use three different cooking modes at once, thanks to the SmartLid slider. The four protein presets and accompanying nine done-ness levels let you set it and forget it, while the Steam Crisp technology crisps up your food without drying it out.
