Dictionary.com's latest update addresses social justice issues, accessibility tech, and the global climate crisis

Dictionary.com's latest batch of updates just dropped, and they cover a wide range of timely social and cultural topics, including accessibility, homelessness, and the global climate crisis.

Announced on March 29, the website's professionals (known as lexicographers) updated more than 2,400 entries, which include the 235 new entries, 72 new definitions in existing entries, and 1,024 revised definitions. The website says it wanted to address the ever-changing cultural spectrum of climate, social sciences, and health, as we encounter them online.

Many of the terms address new ways communities use and have redefined traditional concepts. Notably, the database added the terms "unsheltered," "unhoused," and "houseless" to embody the changing language used by activists and communities. The entry for "unhoused," for example, defines it as "being without a house to live in or lacking permanent housing" and directs users to both the updated terms and the traditional phrase, "homeless." In the same vein, the website added commonly used words among social justice advocates or adjusted definitions to embody their current usage, like those for "trigger," "problematic," and "decolonize."

The update includes new accessibility phrases, like "auto caption," "live caption," and "alt text," common accessibility features that are on the way to becoming standard practice across social sites and personal profiles. "While some of these terms or the technologies they refer to have familiarity, specific features of each type can differ and overlap — and capturing these distinctions and similarities is one of the challenges of defining these words," explained the website's release.

Dictionary.com continues to add more terms relevant to the COVID-19 pandemic as well, this time including the often thrown-around titles of "antivaxxer" and "anti-masker."

And our ongoing global climate crisis was also represented with the website's addition of "climate emergency," which it defines as "a crisis in which long-term change in the earth’s climate is having severe adverse effects on the environment, necessitating immediate and bold countermeasures." It also acknowledged rising tech to address the crisis, like "EV" (electric vehicle), "HEV" (hybrid electric vehicle), "PHEV" (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle), "BEV" (battery electric vehicle), "charging station," and "e-bike."

Per usual, Dictionary.com included some nods to pop-culture moments over the last year, including "NFT," "throuple," "memeify," and "ranked-choice voting" (brought back to our Twitter feeds thanks to the Academy Awards).

The website edited more than a thousand entries to reflect the changes in usage and social context, including the definitions for "boost," which now acknowledges its use in campaigns for COVID-19 vaccinations, and "code-switching," adjusted to include how individuals modify their own behavior to embody different social norms.

"From 'Generation A' to 'zeitgeisty,' our latest update to the dictionary shows just how wide, varied, and complex these changes can be. Our work at Dictionary.com isn't just to capture these changes in language — it's to help our users make sense of them and why they matter for their lives," wrote John Kelly, senior director of editorial for Dictionary.com, in the update's press release. "Because our world is constantly changing, our language is constantly changing."

Scheduling when to tackle a deep clean is hard. That's because it never seems like a good time — what's the point of sweeping today if your dogs are going to shed an even more shocking amount of fur tomorrow?

But that's where robot vacuums come in.

Overachieving Hubble telescope glimpses the most distant star ever seen

Hubble just looked back a whopping 12.9 billion years in time.

The legendary space telescope captured light from the most distant individual star humanity has ever seen. Hubble's observation smashes the previous record by around 4 billion years. The European Space Agency (ESA), which runs the telescope with NASA, announced the record-breaking observation on March 30.

The star is highly "red-shifted," meaning this ancient light has been stretched as it travels away from us in the ever-expanding universe. To us Earthlings, such warped and stretched light appears in red, which is the longest wavelength of visible light.

"We almost didn’t believe it at first, it was so much farther than the previous most distant, highest redshift star," Brian Welch, an astronomer at Johns Hopkins University, said in a statement. Welch led the research about the detection, which was also published in the science journal Nature.

How Hubble saw such a profoundly distant star

It's near impossible for our space telescopes to currently detect a single star in the deep, deep, deep cosmos. (Even stars like Earendel, which are 50 times more massive than the sun and millions of times brighter.)

"Normally at these distances, entire galaxies look like small smudges, the light from millions of stars blending together," Welch explained.

Yet a trick of the cosmos magnified Earendel, making it visible.

Massive objects in the universe warp space, somewhat like a bowling ball sitting atop a mattress. In this case, a cluster of galaxies (WHL0137-08) exists between Earth and the extremely distant star Earendel. The galaxies have warped the fabric of space, and in doing so, created a "powerful natural magnifying glass that distorts and greatly amplifies the light from distant objects behind it," the ESA said.

Earendel happens to be located on or near a "ripple" created in space, which ultimately made such potent magnification. "The effect is analogous to the rippled surface of a swimming pool creating patterns of bright light on the bottom of the pool on a sunny day," the ESA explained. "The ripples on the surface act as lenses and focus sunlight to maximum brightness on the pool floor."

The Hubble Telescope, orbiting some 340 miles above Earth, continues to make unprecedented observations more than 30 years after it started peering at the cosmos. A brand new observatory, the powerful James Webb Space Telescope, has now joined Hubble in space. Webb will soon begin its observations, peering at the earliest galaxies ever formed as well as mysterious planets in our own Milky Way.

HBO reveals release date for 'House of the Dragon' and some new characters

It's official: Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon is coming to HBO August 21.

House of the Dragon is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and delves deep into the history of the Targaryen civil war, also known as the Dance of the Dragons. Based on George R.R. Martin's Fire and Blood, the show promises a new cast of schemers, political intrigue, and, of course, dragons.

Who can you expect to meet in House of the Dragon? Let's take a look at some of the new faces we'll be seeing in our return journey to Westeros.

King Viserys Targaryen

All hail the King of Westeros, Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine), first of his name. He's the fifth king of the Targaryen dynasty. All he wants is to uphold his family's legacy and foster a sense of peace and prosperity in the kingdom. Essentially, he's an all-around good guy — but we've seen what can happen to good guys in Westeros before.

Pictured above, likely plotting a power play, are Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy) and her uncle Daemon (Matt Smith). Rhaenyra is the eldest daughter of King Viserys, in theory making her his successor, and Daemon is Viserys's brother. They're both fierce dragonriders, so fingers crossed we'll see some solid dragon action with them early on.

House of the Dragon introduces a house we didn't meet in Game of Thrones: House Velaryon. They're the second most powerful house in Westeros, behind the Targaryens. They're incredibly rich, and since they share the Targaryens' Valyrian heritage, they can marry into the royal family. Above, we see Lord Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) and his wife Rhaenys Targaryen (Eve Best). Lord Corlys is a formidable sailor, earning him the title of Sea Snake, while Rhaenys is known The Queen Who Never Was. The Great Council passed her up as heir to the throne in favor of her cousin Viserys.

Queen Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) and her father Otto (Rhys Ifans) may not be Targaryens, but they are important players in the battles to come. Alicent is Viserys's second wife, and Otto is his Hand. They fight not with dragons, but with their keen intelligence and political knowledge.

Hailing from Dorne, Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) is a skilled fighter without a title or land to his name. His gift with a sword will lead him to become a knight of the Kingsguard.

Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno), also known as Lady Misery of the White Worm, is a dancer from Lys who became Prince Daemon's most trusted ally.

No need to set anything else up with another provider or platform.

What is a Squarespace template, exactly?

A Squarespace template (or theme) is a pre-designed, ready-to-use demo website that you can customize with different colors, pages, fonts, and drag-and-drop element blocks like text, images, galleries, buttons, and forms. Squarespace describes them as "a starting point to help inspire your site's design," noting that "[you] can keep the structure of your original design intact by replacing the demo content with your own, or you can completely change the design of your site and start from scratch."

Each template has been built exclusively for Squarespace, which means you won’t find them on WordPress, Wix, or other site-building platforms.

Are Squarespace templates mobile-friendly?

All Squarespace templates are mobile-optimized from the jump, which is awesome for two reasons: Mobile-friendly sites look great on all devices and get higher priority from Google when it comes to indexing and SEO rankings.

Templates from Squarespace version 7.0 have separate mobile styles that activate on smaller devices, while their version 7.1 counterparts adapt to mobile view automatically. (More on those in a sec.) Which version of Squarespace is better: 7.0 or 7.1?

Squarespace version 7.0 categorizes its 91 templates into certain template "families," which are groups of similarly coded templates alike in their basic structure and functionality. Each one has their own rules and customization options, which means you sometimes need to swap templates and start over (and risk losing content) if you're after a specific feature. Squarespace did away with these families with the release of version 7.1 in early 2020, giving all 143 of its new templates the same features and underlying structure to make it easier to change your site's style in seconds.

That being said, neither version is conclusively "better" than the other. Version 7.1 is probably the ideal choice for people who are new to Squarespace since its template formatting streamlines the design process, but if you've built a site on the platform before, you may want to stick with version 7.0 — its templates have a bunch of advanced features that haven't been added to the new ones yet. (See: parallax scrolling, one especially popular feature of the beloved Brine template family that's missing from version 7.1; people were pretty salty about that one.)

One caveat: It's not possible to switch a site directly between Squarespace versions 7.0 and 7.1, so be prepared to maybe rebuild yours eventually if you change your mind down the road. On the bright side, Squarespace offers a free 14-day trial so you can noodle around with both versions before you commit.

Is Squarespace better than WordPress?

This one's pretty situational. WordPress is best for people on either end of the customization spectrum: You can use the free version to create a super basic blog, or go balls-to-the-wall on a totally unique, from-scratch website with premium themes and tens of thousands of plugins. Keep in mind that the latter requires managing your own hosting, security, and updates; you may also need to hire a developer if your coding skills aren't up to par.

Spam text messages flood Verizon Wireless phones

Have you recently received a text message…from your own phone number?

If so, do not click the link you were sent! You obviously didn't send it to yourself. And your phone carrier, likely Verizon in this case, did not send it to you either.

According to Verizon Wireless, the company is currently investigating a mass spam text message campaign targeting its customers.

"Verizon is aware that bad actors are sending spam text messages to some customers which appear to come from the customers’ own number," a Verizon spokesperson stated in a statement first provided to The Verge. "Our team is actively working to block these messages, and we have engaged with US law enforcement to identify and stop the source of this fraudulent activity. Verizon continues to work on behalf of the customer to prevent spam texts and related activity."

The spam tactic of spoofing a target's phone number and then calling or texting them is not new. Phone numbers from all carriers are susceptible to these kinds of spammy marketing messages and scams. However, this specific spam campaign seems fairly widespread among Verizon Wireless customers specifically.

While all of these spam messages try to direct their targets to a link, it seems that the type of links being sent greatly vary. Some Verizon customers have reported being sent a link to a fake customer survey. A classic spam text message tactic telling the target that they need to click a link to claim a free gift as a result of paying their most recent phone bill is also being deployed here. Another spam message attempts to send Verizon customers to the website for Russian state-owned news network, Channel One Russia. 

Complaints to the FCC regarding spam text messages have continued to rise, showing this is clearly a widespread problem in recent years. However, it's unclear why this specific flood of spam texts appears to be targeting Verizon Wireless customers. Verizon is one of the largest U.S. wireless carriers. But, AT&T is as well, yet the latter's customers don't appear to be experiencing this influx of spam texts at this time. Verizon says that its systems have not been compromised in any way that would result in these spam texts being sent to their customers.

Apple Pay closes a loophole to end support for the Russian payment service, Mir

The Russian payment card system called Mir will no longer be hosted on Apple Pay, adding to the existing restrictions against Russian economic activity enacted via Apple's contactless payment service.

The Mir suspension took effect on on March 24, according to an announcement on Mir's website. Apple also alerted Russia's National Card Payment System (NSPK).

According to The Verge, the translated announcement states that uploading new Mir cards to Apple Pay is no longer possible, and any Mir cards added prior to the suspension should stop working over the next few days.

Apple Pay has been available in Russia since 2016, and Mir has been on the service since last year. But as of March 1, 2022, Apple had taken several measures to limit economic activity in Russia on its platforms in response to Russia's attack on Ukraine. Previous measures included restricting access to Russian MasterCard and Visa holders.

This latest Mir suspension removes Russia's own internal payment system from Apple's platform, making it so both international and domestic purchases in Russia cannot be made using Apple Pay. Before suspending Mir, Russian Apple Pay users had a loophole that allowed them to still access the contactless payment system so long as they were making their purchases via Mir.

Apple isn't the only tech company restricting Russian economic activity via its platforms. According to the Wall Street Journal, Google is also pausing a pilot program that allowed Mir cards on Google Pay. Russian Google Pay users also cannot access MasterCard or Visa, as the U.S.-based card networks have pulled out of the country entirely.

Notably, though, the lack of contactless card access via Google Pay is not a direct action from Google or its parent company, Alphabet. Because Visa and MasterCard suspended their own services in Russia more broadly, Google hasn't taken responsibility for suspensions, and hasn't itself addressed the pause of the pilot program that Mir was using.

"Google Pay is pausing payments-related services in Russia as a result of payment services disruption out of our control," a Google spokeswoman told the WSJ.

Russian contactless payment users on both Apple Pay and Google Pay have also been affected by restrictions from other international banks, a list that Russia's Central Bank has said includes VTB Group, Sovcombank, Novikombank, Promsvyazbank, and Otkritie FC Bank. These restrictions mostly affect any purchases made via Apple Pay or Google Pay by Russians while abroad, or online to stores based in countries that have taken financial sanctions against Russia (h/t The Verge).

FCC flags Russian cybersecurity firm Kaspersky as a risk to national security

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission has deemed all products and services from the Russia-based cybersecurity firm Kaspersky an "unacceptable risk to national security."

According to the FCC's release, the move comes in an effort to uphold 2019's Secure and Trusted Communications Networks Act, which requires the agency to publish a list that details any communications equipment or services which may present a risk to national security.

The FCC published its so-called "Covered List" for the first time in March 2021, when it named Chinese companies Huawei, ZTE, Hytera Communications, Hikvision, and Dahua. With this year's update, the full list only names eight companies that pose such risk, and Kaspersky is the only one based in Russia.

The company's inclusion on the list means it is banned from receiving support from the FCC's Universal Service Fund. According to Reuters, the $8 billion fund is used to maintain communications services in rural areas and for low income users and facilities.

Kaspersky's arrival on the Covered List this year follows a 2017 directive barring the company's flagship antivirus product on federal computer systems. More recently, the FCC's move subsequently spurred bug bounty platform HackerOne to indefinitely suspend Kaspersky from using its services, as announced on Twitter.

Kaspersky has maintained that such federal action against its services is unconstitutional, claiming both the initial 2017 prohibition and this year's Covered List designation to be be based not on actual evidence against the company, but rather political motivations. That's the position the company took in a statement to Bleeping Computer earlier this week.

"Kaspersky maintains that the U.S. Government’s 2017 prohibitions on federal entities and federal contractors from using Kaspersky products and services were unconstitutional," the statement reads. It goes on to note that the FCC's latest update to the Covered List is flawed because, the company maintains, there's been "public evidence" to justify the 2017 move, which is also referenced in the FCC's announcement.

"This decision is not based on any technical assessment of Kaspersky products – that the company continuously advocates for – but instead is being made on political grounds."
