Thousands of Tesla Model X and S vehicles recalled over airbag defect
Some Tesla Model X and S vehicles from 2021 could have an airbag issue.
A recall filed through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration last week notes that the driver airbag could tear if deployed on as many as 7,600 cars. So far in 2021, Tesla has made a combined 11,281 of these two EVs.
NHTSA estimates only 1 percent of the 7,600 vehicles have the problem, which stemmed from a new production method at one of Tesla’s suppliers in Mexico.
The defect was discovered during quality testing earlier this year. There were not any real-world incidents, and no injuries or deaths have been reported.
Tesla is replacing the airbags for free on all potentially affected vehicles. Those with Model X vehicles made between Sept. 3 and Sept. 23 and Model S vehicles produced between June 21 and Sept. 29 will be notified about the recall and complimentary fix.

17. Monsters, Inc.
Get Billy Crystal and John Goodman together for a movie about monsters that run into a little human trouble at an energy factory, and you get this.

The ensuing adventure is a brilliant deconstruction of Disney tropes full of wit, charm, and excellent musical numbers. Seriously, good luck getting “That’s How You Know” out of your head once you’ve heard it. Nintendo's adorable Zelda-themed 'Game & Watch' is a perfect kid's toy for adults
Video games aren't inherently toys, but our toys of the 21st century can easily offer up video games as part of their package. Nintendo gets it.
The beloved Japanese game publisher and developer wowed elder fans in 2020 with the launch of Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros., a $50 handheld gaming device that's roughly the size of those old Nokia feature phones (though Nintendo's are significantly thinner). The earlier release packed in plenty: Two entire Mario games, including the original NES classic Super Mario Bros. as well as its previously Japan-only sequel, plus a very simple juggling game modeled after the original Game & Watch line, and a thematically appropriate animated clock.
Now, with 2021's Game & Watch: The Legend of Zelda, Nintendo's novel handheld officially levels up. The first Zelda game, basically an early example of an action RPG, is immediately more involved and complex than Super Mario Bros. It's one of three Zelda games included in this package, alongside Zelda II: The Adventure of Link and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. The throwback Game & Watch minigame and animated clock are also back, this time with a Zelda theme, and there's an animated timer.
A little history for those who might not know: The NES wasn't Nintendo's first dance with video games at home. A couple years before the iconic console's 1983 launch in Japan, Nintendo had a line of handheld gaming devices called "Game & Watch." These diminutive, battery-powered curiosities featured extremely low-tech and easy-to-grasp games that played on a rudimentary liquid-crystal display. With the simplest options costing around $20, they were also priced in a way that wouldn't fill parents with terror.
The 21st-century Game & Watch revival is built to carry the same kind of appeal. They're relatively cheap (at least compared to most modern game-playing hardware) at $50. The games, while more involved than the OG Game & Watch titles, aren't graphically intense by today's standards. They're just old and widely adored NES games baked into a package that lands like a nostalgia bomb.
Now, with 2021's Game & Watch: The Legend of Zelda, Nintendo's novel handheld officially levels up.
All of that was as true with the Super Mario model in 2020 as it is with the Zelda model now. But the new release also feels like a step forward in some ways, and it starts with the selection of titles. The inclusion of an entire third game is no small thing, for one. But it's not just more to play, it's also a more exciting spread of options.
The Legend of Zelda, the first one, should need no introduction at this point: Link's classic quest to defeat Ganon is about as synonymous with "video games" as Mario himself. Zelda II: The Adventure of Link should be a big surprise to those who never encountered it for the way it experiments with some unique-to-the-series ideas, like a heavy emphasis on side-scrolling gameplay. And finally, the Game Boy sequel to Zelda, Link's Awakening — which was reborn as a beautiful Switch remake in 2019 — is presented here in its original monochrome form.
There's not really a direct comparison to be drawn between Mario and Zelda; they're fundamentally different types of games. But the latter is inarguably a more story-driven affair, offering deeper hooks for a modern audience than Nintendo's definitive platformer. Also don't forget, The Legend of Zelda released three years after the NES launched, so this Game & Watch showcase captures a slightly later evolution of formative video games.
The clock and timer are neat Zelda-themed affairs that count away minutes and seconds as Link wanders and fights through familiar Zelda settings on autopilot (though you can take control, too). Nintendo really needs to set these things up with a charging stand of some kind, though. I've engineered makeshift docks on my nightstand to make both Game & Watch devices work as bedside alarm clocks, and it's so cool.
The size of the new Game & Watch line — Mario and Zelda are identical in this regard — may also be a problem for older players who have larger hands. The built-in directional pad and buttons feel fine, if a little mushy to press (as opposed to clicky). But the Game & Watch fits comfortably into the palm of your hand. Large-fingered players will quickly realize it's easy to press the wrong button, or multiple buttons simultaneously, just because of the lack of real estate.
With all that said, this Zelda Game & Watch is a hard package to resist if you're all-in on Nintendo. The superlative lineup of games, which also includes a Zelda-themed remake of the classic Game & Watch title, Vermin (a dead-simple take on Whack-a-Mole, basically), is the top selling point. Sure, you can play all of these games elsewhere, and on screens that measure larger than 2.5 inches. But there's something special about playing on this delightfully portable little handheld, which fits in pretty much any pocket or pouch.
Maybe it's the amount of care that went into the design, from the light-up Triforce on the back of the unit to the animated clock and timer-pulling elements from Zelda and Zelda II, respectively. This new Game & Watch isn't any more "premium" than the last one — it's a little plastic device with rubberized buttons and a sharp-yet-exceedingly tiny LCD screen. But for fans old enough to remember Game & Watch, the nostalgia pull is strong when this hunk of plastic and circuits nestles into your hands.
It's not just nostalgia, though. Think back for a minute to the NES Classic and SNES Classic releases. Those pint-sized recreations of classic Nintendo consoles, each bundled with tens of games, dazzled with their form and function both. They sold out in an instant and quickly became highly sought-after holiday gifts. While many of the games they offered were playable elsewhere even then, there was something distinctly novel about playing on the Classic consoles and their satisfyingly authentic throwback controllers.
In many ways, these now-two Game & Watch revivals represent a distillation of that same idea. Nintendo has come up with a pint-sized and relatively low-priced toy for adults that any games-loving kid can enjoy, too. It's retro in that particular way of 21st-century pop culture, where it feels like a piece of the past that's been freshened up for the present.
Game & Watch: The Legend of Zelda doesn't rewrite the basic script Nintendo came up with for 2020's Mario edition. It's simply more of a good thing. In a world of gaming where adult-oriented toys cost hundreds of dollars up front and then hundreds or thousands more in individual game purchases, here we have this $50 nostalgia bomb that delivers more than 30 hours of low-fi joy to the palm of your hand.

These 5 laptops for under $1,000 are perfect for school or work
Sure, a smartphone or tablet might be the most fun way to browse social media and chat with your friends, but when it comes time to do real schoolwork or an adult job (the horror!), you'll probably need to trade in the touchscreen for a keyboard and get at it.
Unfortunately, laptops cost money, just like everything else. Their prices can quickly cross over into four-digit territory if you leap at the highest-end specs. But you don’t need to spend that much to get a competent laptop for school or work. You may not get a spruced-up gaming machine or a video editing powerhouse, but these recent laptops all cost less than $1,000 and could serve you just right.
HP Pavilion Aero 13
If pure portability is what you care about the most, HP’s Pavilion Aero 13 has your back. It’s on the more expensive side of our sub-$1,000 price spectrum with a $700 starting tag, but that cost doesn’t come without some perks. The 13.3-inch display is housed in an ultra light and thin body, coming in with just 0.67 inches of thickness and less than 2.2 pounds of weight.

On top of that, it comes with the brand new Windows 11 operating system, AMD Ryzen processors, SSD storage starting at 265GB, and 16GB RAM. With specs like that, this little guy will surely be powerful enough to get you through the school or work day without any hitches. Plus, you get a USB-C port, two USB type-A ports, a HDMI port, and a headphone jack for all your accessory needs.
Surface Go 3
Just because tablets aren't always suited for serious work tasks doesn’t mean they aren’t nice to have. There’s been a flood of 2-in-1 laptop/tablet hybrids over the past several years, and Microsoft’s Surface line is one of the most popular brands in that business. The Surface Go 3, released in late 2021, is by far the cheapest of the lot, with a $399 starting price for a Windows 11-ready 2-in-1. That price is a bit deceptive, though, as the optional keyboard cover attachment will run you an extra $99 when there isn’t a sale.
Of course, that low price means you won’t get bleeding edge specs. RAM ranges from just 4 to 8GB while storage ranges from just 64 to 128GB, and the Intel Pentium (or Core i3 on the $629 model) processors aren’t the latest and greatest in the world. But it’s only 1.2 pounds and doubles as a 10.5-inch tablet when you don’t need to type out long paragraphs. And with 11 hours of battery life and a USB-C port, you can get through the day and use some accessories while you’re at it. Don’t worry, there’s a headphone jack, too.
Dell Inspiron 15 3000 (3511)
Dell’s Inspiron 15 3000 laptop isn’t a powerhouse or loaded with hardware gimmicks, but it is an affordable laptop with decent specs and Windows 11 built in. It has a wide range of builds starting at $250 and going all the way up to $700 with the best specs, which include an 11th-gen Intel Core i7 processor, 12GB RAM, and 512GB of storage. Again, not spectacular, but considering you get a large 15.6-inch display to go along with all that, this is a decent value with plenty of punch to handle all of your business.
The only real downside is a weak port selection. Three USB ports are great, but none of them are USB-C. You do get a headphone jack and an SD card slot, so not all is lost.
Asus Chromebook Detachable CM3
Back in the realm of 2-in-1s, the Asus Chromebook Detachable CM3 is similar to the Surface Go 3, with the major difference being that the detachable keyboard and stylus are both included in the $369 starting price instead of adding hidden accessory fees. One downside is that it runs ChromeOS instead of Windows 11, but for students, ChromeOS is lightweight and perfectly capable of web browsing, streaming, and word processing.
Its specs are modest, with 4GB RAM and either 64GB or 128GB of storage. There’s also just one USB-C port and a headphone jack. Still, this is a solid value if you want both a work and entertainment machine.
Acer Aspire 5
Our last cheap laptop isn’t full of fancy bells and whistles, but that’s fine. The Acer Aspire 5 starts at $449 and comes in a variety of configurations, with starting RAM ranging from 8GB all the way to 20GB in the $629 model. Storage also ranges from 128GB to 1TB, with SSD options for fast loading. You have the option of AMD Ryzen 3 or 11th-gen Intel Core i3 processors as well.
Aside from that, it’s a no-frills laptop with a 15.6-inch display and three USB ports, none of them USB-C. You also get HDMI and Ethernet ports, which is nice. And finally, the most important bit of all: There’s a headphone jack. Rejoice!

HBO's 'The Gilded Age' trailer oozes historical drama
It's time to scratch that Downton Abbey itch with a new show from creator Julian Fellowes. HBO released a teaser for Fellowes' The Gilded Age on HBO, starring Christine Baranski, Cynthia Nixon, and more.
Set in late 19th-century New York, the show follows a young woman (Louisa Jacobson) who moves in with her aunts (Baranski and Nixon). While seeking a respite from grieving her father, she finds social struggles, wealth disparities, and class warfare — the kind only this fascinating era of American history can provide.
The nine-episode series is co-written by Sonja Warfield and directed by Michael Engler and Salli Richardson-Whitfield. It also stars Carrie Coon, Morgan Spector, Denée Benton, Taissa Farmiga, Blake Ritson, Simon Jones, Harry Richardson, Thomas Cocquerel, Jack Gilpin, and more.
The Gilded Age premieres on HBO Jan. 24.

Kia EV6 takes fast-charging record from Tesla
Kia's newest electric car is a speed demon at the charging station.
The Korean carmaker announced Wednesday at the Los Angeles Auto Show that its new EV6 crossover can officially “refuel” more quickly than any other electric vehicle.
In a 2,880-mile drive from New York City to Los Angeles, the car was only plugged in for 7 hours, 10 minutes, and 1 second.
Tesla previously held the record for shortest charging on the same route back in 2015 in a Model S at 12 hours, 48 minutes, and 19 seconds.
The charging achievement shows how EVs are picking up the pace. The average charging stop was under 20 minutes for the EV6. Its 800 volt system takes only 18 minutes to go from 10 percent charged to 80 percent.
The car’s long-range 77.4 kWh battery has a 315-mile range that’s built on Kia’s new Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). The newest Tesla Model S has a 100 kWh battery and over 400 miles of range.
The EV6 is scheduled to arrive in the U.S. early next year.
At the LA Auto Show, Kia also revealed a new hybrid version of its Sportage compact SUV. With a full tank of gas and fully charged battery, it can travel 500 miles.
