Facebook and Apple's PR war seriously heats up
Facebook and Apple's public brawl over privacy concerns and monopoly power just got even more intense.
Apple CEO Tim Cook spoke at the European Computers, Privacy and Data Protection conference on Thursday. He seemed to deliver harsh words for Facebook without actually naming Facebook, a true mean girl power move.
"The fact is that an interconnected ecosystem of companies and data brokers, of purveyors of fake news and peddlers of division, of trackers and hucksters just looking to make a quick buck, is more present in our lives than it has ever been," Cook said. "And it has never been so clear how it degrades our fundamental right to privacy first, and our social fabric by consequence." Read more...

Individual stock traders coordinating their behavior on Reddit have sent Wall Street into an absolute tailspin: A hedge fund has gone bankrupt while some traders have made actual millions.
Users in on the stock-pumping action have a few options for trading stocks. While most users use the trading app Robinhood, another app, called Cash, is also reaping the benefits.
As users report, Robinhood seems to be attempting to get a hold on the free-for-all by blocking some trades of stocks the community is targeting for pumping, such as GameStop and AMC. WallStreetBets' popularity broke Reddit's moderation tools
Reddit's r/wallstreetbets just had too much of a good thing.
As traffic to the subreddit hit an all-time Wednesday, things started to head south on the back end. According to someone familiar with the situation, key moderator tools simply stopped working sometime in the afternoon.
"Mods haven't been able to do some moderation activities since around 6pm (eastern)," they noted.
Modmail, a system which lets subreddit moderators communicate with other redditors, went down. What's more, r/wallstreetbets moderators lost the ability to ban users (including spammers). These problems were immediately followed by r/wallstreetbets moving to an invite-only subreddit — perhaps in a desperate effort to stem the tide of incoming new users. Read more...
