The biggest movie of 2020 is a blockbuster from China you haven’t heard of

No comments :
The Eight Hundred
  • The Eight Hundred is a war epic from China that has become the biggest movie of 2020 so far, based on its global box office results.
  • The movie calls to mind the success of last year's similarly successful Chinese sci-fi blockbuster, Wandering Earth, which is streaming on Netflix.
  • The Eight Hundred tells the story of a group of soldiers and draft dodgers who defend a Shanghai warehouse complex as Japanese forces are overwhelming China.

Chinese filmmakers are doing it again.

Early last year, a surprise sci-fi blockbuster out of China exploded onto the global box office, with that movie (Wandering Earth) eventually performing so strongly that it put the film on par with some of the biggest big screen titles to emerge from the US in recent years, like Black Panther and Avengers: Endgame. No surprise, Netflix snapped up the movie, which tells the story of people trying to save earth from being destroyed by the sun, and which easily set records as one of the highest-grossing films in China ever. And now, more than a year after Wandering Earth become one of the biggest films in the world, a new epic out of China has similarly dominated the global box office. Its name? The Eight Hundred, a war movie depicting a fight between Chinese and Japanese soldiers set in the late 1930s that has become the biggest movie of 2020.

Free PS4 games
  • Sony has announced the free PS4 games that it will be giving away on PS Plus in October.
  • PlayStation Plus subscribers will be able to download Need for Speed Payback and Vampyr for free on Tuesday, October 6th.
  • These are the standard prices for both games on the PlayStation Store: Need for Speed Payback ($19.99), Vampyr ($39.99).

We're just over a month out from the launch of the PS5, but it's business as usual for Sony in October as two more titles are added to the free library of games available to all PlayStation Plus subscribers. Need for Speed Payback is arguably the highlight this month, although it received middling reviews when it launched in 2017. That said, if you're looking for an open-world racing game with plenty of content, this should last you a few weeks.

Everyone said this one thing would cause a massive coronavirus surge – but it hasn’t so far

No comments :
Coronavirus Schools
  • This past summer, experts cautioned that opening schools back up would cause a massive spike in coronavirus infections.
  • With September winding down, we've seen conflicting evidence as to the impact schools reopenings have had on coronavirus infections.
  • While young children typically don't experience severe coronavirus symptoms, studies show that children as young as 10 can transmit it to adults.

With the number of coronavirus deaths now above 200,000, experts warn that we might see a huge increase in new infections -- and associated deaths -- over the next few months. The rationale behind this dire projection can be traced back to the fact that colder weather is on the horizon and flu season is right around the corner. What's more, with schools now in full swing, experts have been warning that children -- who typically do not endure severe coronavirus symptoms -- could likely spread the virus to their parents, teachers, and the extended community.

Having said that, a study conducted by USA Today found that the massive spike in new coronavirus infections anticipated by schools re-opening didn't play out as some anticipated. The study specifically focused on schools in Florida and found that the number of coronavirus infections among kids aged 5 to 17 actually declined from July through September.

Indian startups explore forming an alliance and alternative app store to fight Google’s ‘monopoly’

No comments :

Google, which reaches more internet users than any other firm in India and commands 99% of the nation’s smartphone market, has stumbled upon an odd challenge in the world’s second largest internet market: Scores of top local entrepreneurs.

Dozens of top startups and firms in India are working to form an alliance and toying with the idea of launching an app store to cut their reliance on Google, five people familiar with the matter told TechCrunch.

The list of entrepreneurs include high-profile names such as Vijay Shekhar Sharma, co-founder and chief executive of Paytm (India’s most valuable startup), Deep Kalra of travel ticketing firm MakeMyTrip, and executives from PolicyBazaar, Sharechat and many other firms.

The growing list of founders expressed deep concerns about Google’s “monopolistic” hold on India, and discussed what they alleged was unfair and inconsistent enforcement of Play Store’s guidelines in the country.

The conversations, which began in recent weeks, escalated on Tuesday after Google said that starting next year developers with an app on Google Play Store must give the company a cut of as much as 30% of several app-related payments.

Dozens of executives “from nearly every top startup and firm” in India attended a call on Tuesday to discuss the way forward, some of the people said, requesting anonymity. A 30% cut to Google is simply unfeasible, people on the call unanimously agreed.

Vishal Gondal, the founder of fitness startup GOQii, confirmed the talks to TechCrunch and said that an alternative app store would immensely help the Indian app ecosystem.

TechCrunch reached out to Paytm on Monday for comment and the startup declined the request.

In recent months, several major startups in India have also expressed disappointment over several of the existing industry bodies, which some say have failed to work on nurturing the local ecosystem.

The tension between some firms and Google became more public than ever late last month after the Android-maker reiterated Play Store’s gambling policy, sending a shockwave to scores of startups in the country that were hoping to cash in on the ongoing season of Indian Premier League cricket tournament.

Google temporarily pulled Paytm’s marquee app from the Play Store citing repeat violation of its Play Store policies. Disappointed by Google’s move, Paytm’s Sharma said in a TV interview, “This is the problem of India’s app ecosystem. So many founders have reached out to us… if we believe this country can build digital business, we must know that it is at somebody else’s hand to bless that business and not this country’s rules and regulations.”

Google has sent notices to several firms in India including Hotstar, TechCrunch reported last month. Indian newspaper Economic Times reported on Wednesday that the Mountain View giant had also sent warnings to food delivery startups Swiggy and Zomato.

Vivek Wadhwa, a Distinguished Fellow at Harvard Law School’s Labor and Worklife Program, lauded the banding of Indian entrepreneurs and likened Silicon Valley giants’ hold on India to the rising days of East India Company, which pillaged India. “Modern day tech companies pose a similar risk,” he told TechCrunch.

Some of the participating members are also hopeful that the government, which has urged the citizens in India to become self-reliant to revive the declining economy, would help their movement.

Other than its reach on Android, Google today also leads the mobile payments market in India, TechCrunch reported earlier this year.

The giant, which has backed a handful of startups in India and is a member of several Indian industry bodies, invested $4.5 billion in Mukesh Ambani’s telecom giant Jio Platforms earlier this year.

India’s richest man Ambani, who runs oil-to-retails giant Reliance Industries, is an ally of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Jio Platforms has attracted over $20 billion in investment from Google, Facebook, and 11 other high-profile investors this year.

The voluminous investment in Jio Platforms has puzzled many industry executives. “I see no business case for Facebook investing in Jio beyond saying we need regulatory help,” said Miten Sampat, a high-profile angel-investor on a podcast published Wednesday.

“This is a white-collar way of saying there is corruption involved, and if the government gets upset, I have invested somewhere with some friend of the government. All of us are losing at the benefit of one company,” he said. Sampat’s views are shared by many industry executives, though nobody has said it on record and in such clearer terms.

Google said in July that it would work with Jio Platforms on low-cost Android smartphones. Jio Platforms is planning to launch as many as 200 million smartphones in the next three years, according to a pitch the telecom giant has made to several developers. Bloomberg first reported about Jio Platform’s smartphone production plans.

These smartphones, as is the case with nearly 40 million JioPhone feature phones in circulation today, will have an app store with only a few dozen apps, all vetted and approved by Jio, according to one developer who was pitched by Jio Platforms. An industry executive described Jio’s store as a walled-garden.

A possible viable option for startup founders is Indus OS, a Samsung-backed third-party store, which last month said it reaches over 100 million monthly active users. As of earlier this week, Paytm and other firms had not reached out to IndusOS, a person familiar with the matter said.

Chromecast with Google TV vs the “old” Chromecast series

No comments :

In 2013, Google launched the first version of its Chromecast TV dongle. It was designed to cast smartphone apps, including video streaming apps, to big-screen televisions. Seven years later, the market for streaming TV apps has changed, and Google is changing with it. Today, it officially announced Chromecast with Google TV.

So what are the similarities and the differences of Chromecast with Google TV vs Chromecast? Good question.  As you will see, the original Chromecast is still very useful. However, the new Chromecast with Google TV offers a lot more, and it’s not that much more expensive.

Chromecast with Google TV vs Chromecast: Features

Third-gen Chromecast

Back in 2013, smart televisions were still something of a novelty. The first Chromecast allowed TV owners to quickly turn it into a smart television, and inexpensively. If you had a smartphone, and your apps supported Chromecast, you could connect the dongle to your TV’s HMDI port. Then you could cast and watch movies, play games, and more from your phone to your TV.

Later versions of Chromecast did basically the same thing as the original. However, the current third-generation Chromecast streamed smartphone content at 1080p resolution. The more expensive Chromecast Ultra. which launched in 2016, increased the streaming resolution to 4K. It also added support for HDR10 and Dolby Vision video formats and an Ethernet port. It also allowed users to stream high-end PC and console games to their TV via the Google Stadia service.

The new Chromecast with Google TV is a very different device. While it can still cast smartphone apps to your TV, it has Android TV built-in as well. That means you can watch streaming TV and apps directly, with no smartphone required. It comes with its own hardware remote for controlling those apps. It also supports Google Assistant to control apps with your voice, again via the remote.

In fact, for this product, Google has installed a new UI on top of Android TV. That’s where the “Google TV” part of the brand comes in. It allows you to watch movies and TV shows across several streaming apps and services on one screen, rather than switching between apps. It’s very similar to what you will find on the Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV apps. The device supports up to 4k resolution, along with HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision video formats.

Read more: Google TV – All you need to know

Unfortunately, the new Chromecast with Google TV does not yet support the Google Stadia game streaming service. That support is supposed to be added sometime in 2021. If you want Stadia gaming on your big-screen TV right now, you need to either keep or purchase the Chromecast Ultra.

One other minor addition to Chromecast with Google TV are color choices. You have snow, sunrise, and sky colors to pick from.

Chromecast with Google TV vs Chromecast: Price

The current third-generation Chromecast is available for $29.99, while the Chromecast Ultra is priced at $69. The Chromecast with Google TV is on sale now in the US for $49.99.

Which one should you buy?

If you own a 1080p TV, and want an inexpensive way to stream video and other content on your television, the regular Chromecast is your best best. If you want to try out Stadia game streaming, get the Chromecast Ultra. However, if you have a 4K television, and want a better movie and TV show streaming experience without the need for a smartphone, Chromecast with Google TV is a must.

stone age brain surgery
  • An ancient skull found in a cave in Spain reveals evidence of ancient surgery attempts.
  • The skull has a large dent that is partially healed, indicating an attempt at brain surgery that was halted.
  • The skulls and other material suggest possible sacrificial intent.

Modern medical techniques have made brain surgery much safer than it ever has been in the past, but the practice of venturing into a person's skull in the hopes of fixing something dates back to our ancient ancestors. A recent discovery in a cave system in Spain includes the remains of one individual who was the subject of one such operation that apparently failed.

The cave has been a hot spot for archaeological finds in the past, and researchers uncovered portions of the remains of at least two individuals that lived as far back as 4800 B.C., as well as the remains of a juvenile goat and some stone tools.

The 8 states now seeing the worst coronavirus case spikes in the US

No comments :
Coronavirus cases
  • Coronavirus cases are on the rise around the US, with each day bringing a steady drip of new cases as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to grind on.
  • Eight states are seeing a particularly worrisome rise in new coronavirus cases.
  • This comes as former FDA commissioners are warning that the Trump administration is exerting a dangerous level of political influence into the operation of the nation's public health agencies.

In an op-ed in The Washington Post on Wednesday, seven former US Food and Drug Administration commissioners lamented what they see as a dangerous level of political interference from the Trump administration in the work of public health agencies trying to respond to the coronavirus pandemic.

That's particularly troubling, continues the op-ed that was penned by Robert Califf, Scott Gottlieb, Margaret Hamburg, Jane Henney, David Kessler, Mark McClellan, and Andy von Eschenbach. Their concerns include the potential impact this politicization could have on the rollout of a vaccine for the COVID-19 virus, among other things. “For decades," they wrote, "when we and our predecessors spoke as FDA commissioners about issues of regulation and people’s health, the public knew we were speaking on behalf of experts whose judgments were grounded in science. That is changing in deeply troubling ways.” At the same time, this warning comes as the pandemic is continuing to essentially move around the country, whack-a-mole style -- as locales get hit and respond accordingly, spikes in coronavirus cases decline only to surge again elsewhere (and eventually even return to the original locale).

Disney blames 28,000 layoffs on prolonged COVID-19 rules in California and Florida

No comments :
Disney parks
  • The Walt Disney Co. announced on Tuesday that it's laying off 28,000 employees as a result of Disney parks in California and Florida remaining either closed or their capacity capped because of the coronavirus pandemic.
  • In a statement, a Disney executive singled out California for particular blame, since Disneyland is not even allowed to be open at all there, compared to open with a capacity limit at the company's Florida theme park.
  • Disney quickly closed its theme parks earlier this year just as the coronavirus pandemic was starting to take hold in the US.

The coronavirus pandemic is still raging across the US, putting business from small mom-and-pops all the way up to corporate giants like Disney in an at-times impossible position. Coronavirus-related restrictions that, for example, put a cap on how many customers a business may serve at any one time are decimating the finances of many such businesses -- and, accordingly, The Walt Disney Co. announced on Tuesday that some 28,000 employees in its Disney parks division in California and Florida are getting pink slips.

The company's parks can't stay closed or, for those that are open, capped indefinitely, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products chairman Josh D'Amaro explained in a memo sent out to employees. That's a reference to the fact that Disney quickly shuttered its parks in the spring, as the coronavirus crisis was just starting to take hold. Its parks in Florida have reopened, but that's not yet the case in California, which speaks to the distinctive paths both of those states have taken in responding to COVID-19. Florida, run by a Republican governor, has been aggressive about pushing the state to reopen and return business to at least a degree of normalcy, while in California, led by a Democratic governor, the onus has been on aggressive public health measures like strict closure orders.

"We’ve cut expenses, suspended capital projects, furloughed our cast members while still paying benefits, and modified our operations to run as efficiently as possible," D'Amaro's letter reads. "However, we simply cannot responsibly stay fully staffed while operating at such limited capacity.

"As heartbreaking as it is to take this action, this is the only feasible option we have in light of the prolonged impact of COVID-19 on our business, including limited capacity due to physical distancing requirements and the continued uncertainty regarding the duration of the pandemic."

In the statement below from D'Amaro that's separate from his letter to employees, he particularly singles out the state of California, saying that the financial issues facing the company have been "exacerbated" by the "state's unwillingness to lift restrictions that would allow Disneyland to reopen."

https://twitter.com/DisneyParksNews/status/1311044474793947137

Most of the 28,000 layoffs announced Tuesday involved part-time workers. But Disney said they do affect employees at all levels, meaning that salaried and hourly employees are included in this number, as well.

It's not known how many workers would lose their jobs between Disney's Florida and California operations, according to The Associated Press. But what is known is that Walt Disney World in Florida employees about 77,000 people, per the AP, and the Disneyland Resort in California has more than 30,000 employees.

Disney furloughed up to 43,000 workers earlier this year and paid for their health insurance at its Florida resort. Many of those workers were brought back in July when it reopened.

Amazon is coming for your hands.

Dubbed Amazon One, the company hopes the network of scanners will one day serve as an all-purpose form of identification.

You should absolutely not participate.

While those forms of biometric ID have their own drawbacks, Amazon One is different. HMD Global publishes, then retracts Nokia Android 11 update timeline

No comments :

Here's something weird and interesting. HMD Global, the company making Nokia smartphones, has published its (very rough) timeline for when you should expect its devices to get the update to Android 11. Hold on, you say - that's neither weird nor (when you see how vague it is) that interesting. Well, the weird and interesting bit is that the company has quickly taken the timeline down after publishing it. So we're not quite sure what's going on here. Maybe someone made it live too soon, but if so - why exactly would it be "too soon"? Android 11 has been out since the beginning of the...

XtalPi lands massive $319M SoftBank-led round C to continue its high-tech drug discovery

No comments :

XtalPi, an American-Chinese biotech firm that focuses on AI-assisted drug discovery, has raised a $319 million round C from a slate of enthusiastic investors led by SoftBank’s Vision Fund. It joins numerous others with 9-figure rounds in what is clearly a valuable and competitive space.

XtalPi works with major pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer that need to identify promising new drug-like molecules and learn as much about them as possible. It’s very much a race, so companies claiming to use AI to speed up the process have attracted major funding. Though there have been no prominent breakthroughs to speak of resulting from the space, it’s hard to imagine any major player can afford to ignore it.

This company, founded in 2014, purports to offer extremely low-level simulation and prediction of target molecules, both simulating the physics at atomic levels and doing the more traditional data science work that eliminates dead ends and points towards more fruitful avenues for investigation.

Although these advances are in the digital space, the companies still need a large staff of skilled scientists who can verify and advance the results — as well as the facilities to support them. It may help speed up the slow-paced pharmaceutical industry, but that doesn’t mean it’s cheap or easy to do so.

AI-enhanced (which is really to say using machine learning techniques) biotech firms have attracted huge funding rounds and lucrative (or potentially lucrative) partnerships as pharma’s biggest companies place their bets. (Insitro founder Daphne Koller spoke on this topic just two weeks ago at Disrupt.)

XtalPi plans to use the money as you might expect: To scale its existing operations with improved algorithms, more data, and additional computing power.

“We believe AI holds the answer to solving pharma’s productivity challenge,” said chairman and co-founder Shuhao Wen in a press release. “More specifically, XtalPi’s AI-powered platform can improve the industry’s research efficiency and success rate in order to lower costs for discovering and developing new drugs. We look forward to applying our platform to help clients bring more first-in-class and breakthrough drugs to the market and address significant unmet medical needs to benefit patients on a global scale.”

Softbank led the round, with PICC Capital and Morningside making up the larger remaining part, as well as follow-ons from existing investors Tencent, Sequoia China, China Life, and SIG.

Indonesian fintech startup BukuWarung gets new funding to add financial services for small merchants

No comments :

A month after completing Y Combinator’s accelerator program, BukuWarung, an financial tech startup that serves small businesses in Indonesia, announced it has raised new funding from a roster of high-profile investors, including partners of DST Global, Soma Capital and 20VC.

The amount of the funding was undisclosed, but a source told TechCrunch that it was between $10 million to $15 million. The new capital will be used to hire for BukuWarung’s technology team. TechCrunch first profiled BukuWarung in July.

Angel investors in the round include several high-profile founders and executives: finance technology platform Plaid’s co-founder William Hockey; Tinder co-founder Justin Mateen; Superhuman founder Rahul Vohra; Adobe chief product officer Scott Belsky; Clearbit chairman and startup advisor Josh Buckley; former Uber chief product officer Manik Gupta; Spotify’s former head of new markets in Asia Sriram Krishnan; 20VC founder Harry Stebbings; Nancy Xiao, an investor with Bond Capital; and Fast co-founder Allison Barr Allen. Angel investors from WhatsApp, Square and Airbnb also participated.

Launched last year by co-founders Chinmay Chauhan and Abhinay Peddisetty, BukuWarung is targeted at the 60 million “micromerchants” in Indonesia, including neighborhood store (or warung) owners. The app was originally created as a replacement for pen and apper ledgers, but plans to introduce financial services including credit, savings and insurance. In August, the company integrated digital payments into its platform, enabling merchants to take customer payments from bank accounts and digital wallets like OVO and DANA. BukuWarung’s goal is to fill the same role for Indonesian merchants that KhataBook and OKCredit do in India.

One of the reasons BukuWarung launched digital payments was in response to customer demand for contactless transactions and instant payouts during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since introducing the feature, the company said it has already processed several million U.S. dollars in total payment volume (TPV) on an annualized basis. The company says it now serves about 1.2 million merchants across 750 locations in Indonesia, focusing on tier 2 and tier 3 cities.

Digital payments is also the first step into building out BukuWarung’s financial services, which will help differentiate it from other bookkeeping. The payments features is currently free and BukuWarung is experimenting with different monetization models, including making a small margin on fees.

“The reason why we launched payments is also very strategic, because there is a lot of pull in the market. We have already seen several millions annualized TPV in less than a month, because the payments we offer are cost-efficient as well and cheaper than to get from a bank,” Chauhan told TechCrunch.

“If you look at the Indian players, like Khatabook, they have also launched digital payments. The reason for that is because it’s a very essential step for building a business and monetization,” he added. “If you don’t have payments, you can’t do anything like that.”

Chauhan added that building a financial services platform is the difference between providing a utility app that replaces bookkeeping ledgers, and becoming an essential service for merchants that will eventually include lending for working capital, savings and insurance products. The bookkeeping features on BukuWarung will feed into the financial services aspect by providing data to score creditworthiness, and help small merchants, who often have difficulty securing working capital from traditional banks, get access to lines of credit.

Microsoft outage leaves users unable to access Office, Outlook, Teams

No comments :

Microsoft said it’s investigating an authentication outage with Office 365, preventing users from accessing some of the company’s most widely used services, including Office.com, Outlook.com, and Teams.

The company’s status dashboard said the issue started at 2:25pm PT, and has impacted mostly consumer users across the globe for the last few hours. Some government users may also be impacted, the company said.

In a series of tweets, Microsoft said that it tried to fix the issue, but was forced to roll back its changes after the fix failed.

For now, Microsoft said it was “rerouting traffic to alternate infrastructure to improve the user experience while we continue to investigate the issue.”

But that leaves millions on the U.S. west coast and users in Australia still unable to access their online services.

TechCrunch will keep you posted with developments. In the meantime, feel free to catch up with some of the bigger stories of the day.

Looking for Android 11 update info? We’ve got you covered.

1. Essential Android 10 update

Essential Phone

September 3, 2019: On Twitter, Essential announced Android 10 is now rolling out to the Essential Phone. The company noted the update is rolling out “for select open market customers.” Android 10 should be available for all Essential Phone owners in the coming days.

2. OnePlus Android 10 update

OnePlus Android 10 update

September 3, 2019: On the same day as the official Android 10 launch, OnePlus announced an Android 10 open beta for the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro. This is not a stable release, but a good first step towards hitting that ETA we mentioned above. More details here.

September 4, 2019: OnePlus has announced that the OnePlus 6 and 6T will get Android 10 by the end of this month. The company also released open beta builds for the two phones, which are “meant to prepare your devices for the Android 10 update” — learn more here.

September 18, 2019: OnePlus has released the second Android 10 open beta update for the OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro. The update appears to mostly involve bug fixes and small design tweaks — learn more here.

September 21, 2019: Great news for all you OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro owners out there. The company is now rolling out the stable version of Android 10 to both devices.

October 2, 2019: Around two weeks ago, OnePlus started rolling out the Android 10 update for the OnePlus 7 series. However, according to users on Reddit as well as the official OnePlus forums, many people still don’t have the update. OnePlus did say the Android 10 upgrade would be a slow rollout, but that usually means over the span of a few days. At this point, it’s been 12 days since OnePlus announced the launch, which suggests there’s been some sort of delay. It’s possible OnePlus halted the rollout entirely. Read the full story here.

October 10, 2019: OnePlus has announced that every OnePlus device from the OnePlus 5 forward will get a stable version of Android 10. Older devices will need to wait quite a while to get it, but the update will come. The OnePlus 6 and 6T will get the beta update by the end of October 2019, while the stable variant will be rolled out a month later. The OnePlus 5 and 5T should receive the stable update in the second quarter of 2020.

October 14, 2019: OnePlus is rolling out Android 10 to the OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro — for real this time. In a community post, the Chinese brand confirmed that “version 10.0 was paused due to certain bugs” and that Oxygen 10.0.1 is now rolling out. It should reach all devices in a few days — learn more here.

October 21, 2019: The Android 10 Open Beta build is now rolling out to the OnePlus 6 and 6T — learn more here. The stable version of the update is expected to hit the devices in November.

October 29, 2019: OnePlus 7 Pro 5G users will need to wait quite a bit to get the Android 10 update. The company’s global community manager said the update is expected to be released sometime in Q1 2020.

November 4, 2019: OnePlus is now rolling out the stable version of Android 10 to the OnePlus 6 and 6T. The update should reach users widely over the next few days.

November 12, 2019: Pete Lau has explained on the company’s forum why OnePlus 7 Pro 5G users have to wait until Q1 to get the Android 10 update. The executive said that 5G “uses a different communications module to establish a faster connection as opposed to 4G, and requires a deeper level of understanding and more rigorous tests, debugging and optimizations to be done to our software and hardware.” He also added that “to achieve the best experience possible, we had to make system optimizations from the fundamental system architecture, in order to deliver a truly fantastic 5G experience.” It looks like the process is a lot more complicated and time-consuming than it may look, which is why users will have to wait a few months for the update. You can read his full statement here.

November 15, 2019: The Android 10 update for the OnePlus 6 and 6T has been halted due to various bugs. OnePlus said it’s “working on a new build with more issue fixing.” The company didn’t specify when the update will roll out globally, only saying it’ll be available “once it’s ready.”

November 25, 2019: OnePlus has confirmed that the OnePlus 10 update for the OnePlus 6 and 6T is almost ready and will start rolling out again soon. Right now, it is awaiting CTS approval. If all goes smoothly, users should expect the update next week.

April 27, 2020: OnePlus has announced that OnePlus 5 and 5T users can download a beta version of Oxygen OS version 10.0 based on Android 10. There’s no word on when the stable version of the update will be ready, but we imagine we won’t have to wait long — learn more here.

May 1, 2020: OnePlus has released a new beta update for the OnePlus 5 and 5T that comes with a few bug fixes and tweaks. It also includes the April 2020 Android security patch.

May 20, 2020: OnePlus launched the third Android 10 beta for the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T, which comes with a few bug fixes and tweaks. There’s still no word on when the stable version will be released.

May 26, 2020: OnePlus is now rolling out the stable version of Android 10 to the OnePlus 5 and 5T. The update comes in at around 1.8GB.

3. Samsung Android 10 update

Android 10 update for Samsung phones

September 17, 2019: Looks like Samsung will soon release its first Android 10 beta update. Rumors have it that the company will roll it out in the US and Europe in early October. There’s no word on which devices will get it, but it’s a good bet we’ll see it on new flagship series such as the Galaxy Note 10 and the Galaxy S10.

October 23, 2019: Samsung has confirmed that the One UI 2.0 beta — based on Android 10 — for the Galaxy Note 10 series will come to the US. The rollout seems to be restricted to the regular Note 10 and Note 10 Plus models, with no mention of the 5G variants. Only unlocked phones will be compatible. In addition to the US, the beta program has also been confirmed for Germany.

November 7, 2019: The third iteration of the One UI 2.0 beta is rolling out now to Samsung Galaxy S10, S10 Plus, and S10e devices. The latest version of the Android 10-based update is available now to all beta program testers and includes a bunch of bug fixes — learn more here.

November 14, 2019: The beta version of the Android 10 update for the unlocked Galaxy Note 10 and 10 Plus has apparently been launched in the US. Users can sign up for the update via the Samsung Members app.

November 18, 2019: Samsung is rolling out its second Android 10 beta to Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10 Plus devices. The new One UI 2.0 beta carries the software version N97*FXXU1ZSK8 and has apparently been spotted on Note 10 devices in India. The same update will likely hit devices in the US, Germany, and South Korea soon.

November 20, 2019: Samsung is shipping out the Android 10-based One UI 2.0 beta to the Galaxy Note 9 in South Korea. This bodes well for a release in other markets, as Samsung doesn’t usually take its time to bring a One UI 2.0 beta to other regions. So we’re expecting a US and European roll-out in the coming days.

November 21, 2019: Samsung is pushing out the sixth beta update to the Galaxy S10 family. The update is apparently being rolled out to all countries where the Galaxy S10 beta is available — learn more here.

November 27, 2019: Samsung Israel has revealed the Android 10 roadmap for a few Samsung devices. You can check it out below, but keep in mind that the updates may ship out sooner or later in other markets.

  • January 2020 — Galaxy S10, Note 10, and Note 9
  • April 2020 — Galaxy S9, Galaxy A7 (2018), Galaxy A9 (2018), Galaxy A50, Galaxy A70, and Galaxy Tab S6
  • May 2020 — Galaxy A20, Galaxy A10, Galaxy A30s, and Galaxy A10s
  • July 2020 — Galaxy Tab S5e and Galaxy Tab S4 10.5

November 28, 2019: It looks like Samsung is ahead of schedule, as the company has reportedly pushed out the stable Android 10-based One UI 2.0 update to the Galaxy S10 phones. The update is only rolling out in Germany for now but is expected to make its way to other markets soon.

November 29, 2019: Samsung UK and India have revealed their Android 10 update roadmaps, which are a little bit different than the one shared by Samsung Israel a few days ago. Samsung’s 2 018 and 2019 flagships will get updated to Android 10-based One UI 2.0 in January 2020 in both countries. This differs from the Israeli roadmap, which shows that the Galaxy S9 series will only get the update in April 2020, while the other 2018 and 2019 flagships get it in January.

The Indian roadmap also gives us update details regarding the Galaxy M series, noting that the Galaxy M20 and M30 will receive the Android 10 update in January 2020. Other M-series phones slated to get the update are the Galaxy M40 (March 2020), Galaxy M30s (April 2020), and Galaxy M10s (May 2020).

December 3, 2019: After being released in Germany a week ago, the Android 10-based One UI 2.0 update for the Galaxy S10 phones is now rolling out in a bunch of other countries. These include Algeria, Bangladesh, France, India, Ireland, Poland, Russia, Spain, the UAE, and the UK, among others.

December 10, 2019: SamMobile reports that the Galaxy S10 5G is now getting the stable version of Android 10 with One UI 2.0 on top in South Korea. The update is expected to reach other markets soon.

December 11, 2019: Samsung is rolling out Android 10 beta updates to the Galaxy S9, S9 Plus, and Note 9 in the US, according to SamMobile. Those interested in trying them out can sign up via the Samsung Members app.

December 12, 2019: Samsung is shipping out Android 10 with One UI 2.0 on top to the Galaxy M20 and M30 in India, SamMobile reports. This is surprising because the two phones were originally scheduled to get the update next month. Looks like Samsung decided to speed things up, which is always great news for consumers.

December 18, 2019: Samsung announced Android 10 with One UI 2 is now rolling out to Galaxy S10 phones in the US. The company also announced the update will be available for Galaxy Note 10 phones by the end of December.

December 20, 2019: The stable version of Android 10 is now rolling out to the Galaxy Note 10 in more than 30 countries, including the UK, Russia, Spain, Germany, Italy, France, and Mexico.

December 23, 2019: The unlocked versions of the Galaxy S10 phones in the US are now receiving the stable Android 10 update.

December 30, 2019: According to users on Reddit, T-Mobile is rolling out the stable version of Android 10 to the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10 Plus.

January 8, 2020: The Galaxy A30 is now getting the Android 10 update in China and Hong Kong, according to Get Droid Tips. The update is expected to hit other markets soon.

January 8, 2020: The stable version of Android 10 is currently rolling out to the Galaxy A40s in China and Hong Kong, SamMobile reports. We expect the update to reach other markets soon, although the exact date is unknown at the moment.

January 10, 2020: Samsung is pushing out the latest stable Android 10 update to unlocked Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G devices in the UK. The update is also rolling out to Indonesian variants of the Note 10 series.

January 14, 2020: Samsung has released the sixth One UI 2.0 beta update for the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus. It is currently rolling out in India and should make it to other regions shortly.
