- Inovio released a coronavirus vaccine update to announce that its experimental DNA drug generated immune responses in 94% of volunteers enrolled in Phase 1 trials.
- The company is part of the US government’s Operation Warp Speed initiative to fast-track the development of COVID-19 vaccines.
- A Phase 2/3 trial will follow this summer, pending regulatory approval.
Inovio Pharmaceuticals kicked off the Phase 1 trial of its INO-4800 coronavirus vaccine candidate in early April, and the company has good news to report for the first stage of testing.
The DNA vaccine is funded in part by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and it’s included in the US government’s Operation Warp Speed initiative to speed up COVID-19 vaccine research. The drug delivered promising results, the company said in a press release, with 94% of volunteers having developed the expected immune response following two doses of the drug. Moreover, a separate preclinical animal challenge study revealed the drug can prevent viral replication in the lungs in mice that were infected with the virus.

Google Pixel 4a gets two more certifications on its way to becoming official
![](https://fdn.gsmarena.com/imgroot/news/20/06/pixel-4a-imda-bis/-184x111/gsmarena_001.jpg)
The Pixel 4a saga continues. This affordable smartphone was initially rumored to make an appearance at the Google I/O conference in May, but then that got canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. So we heard the launch was pushed to July, but apparently that's not happening anymore, with the handset inexplicably now being expected to see the light of day in October. That's weird, considering how much it's already leaked, but it's far from the weirdest thing Google's ever done. Regardless of when the Pixel 4a will actually become available, it's continuing its certification march. It was...

- A piece of ransomware targeting the Mac has been making the rounds on torrent sites.
- The ransomware disguises itself as an app installer for Little Snitch.
- The software itself isn't especially sophisticated but macOS users, as a general rule of safety, should refrain from downloading pirated software.
Mac malware doesn't come along all that often, but when it does it tends to make headlines. The most recent instance of malware targeting Mac users is a piece of ransomware that comes disguised as an installer for the Little Snitch app. The installer link is currently making the rounds on torrent sites and was first noticed on a Russian forum, according to a report from Malwarebytes Labs.
It's worth noting that the ransomware in question doesn't appear to be particularly sophisticated compared to some other malware strains we've seen spring up in recent years.

Goldman Sachs economist just said the most obvious thing ever about face masks
![Face mask Face mask](https://boygeniusreport.files.wordpress.com/2020/06/webp.net-resizeimage-5.jpg?quality=70&strip=all&w=610)
- Goldman Sachs' chief economist has said that a national face mask mandate could not only benefit public health, it could even go so far as to save the economy.
- He made the claim in a note to clients Monday, arguing for a national requirement that everyone wear face masks in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.
- This comes as President Trump has voiced skepticism about face masks, while former Vice President Joe Biden has said he would sign an order requiring them.
With health experts now issuing dire warnings about the trajectory of the coronavirus pandemic over the coming weeks and months, economists are now weighing in with recommendations for what they think ordinary people can do to bend upward slope of cases in the US. Are you ready for this? It's a really simple recommendation, and most of you are probably already doing this anyway -- it's just the holdouts amongst you who are presenting such a worrisome exception right now:
Wear. Your. Face. Mask.
“We find that face masks are associated with significantly better coronavirus outcomes,” Goldman Sachs chief economist Jan Hatzius wrote in a note to clients Monday. “Our baseline estimate is that a national mandate could raise the percentage of people who wear masks by 15 (percentage points) and cut the daily growth rate of confirmed cases by 1.0 (percentage point) to 0.6%.

What is Google Keen? A look at the new rival to Pinterest
Google has launched many social networking services that have never caught on with the general public. That includes Google Plus, which started out in 2011 with a lot of hype, but finally closed in 2019. In June 2020, the company quietly revealed it was working on a more modest social networking project, Google Keen.
So what is Google Keen? That’s what we are going to reveal right now.
The origins of Google Keen
Google Keen was first revealed in a Medium.com post by company team member Cj Adams. In his post, he said that the idea for the service came about when his wife wanted to share information, links, and more about her birding hobby with her husband. Adams, along with three other Google team members, decided they wanted to create a service that made sharing info and resources about hobbies easier.
The four members worked on Keen as part of Google’s Area 120 experimental project division. They also collaborated with the company’s People and AI Research (PAIR) team, which is developing machine learning-based systems to help people out.
What platforms are available for Google Keen?
The service is currently available as a web app at Staykeen.com. It’s also available as an Android mobile app, via a web wrapper.
Is Google Keen free?
The service is free to use, although you will need to access it via a free Google account.
How does the service work?
In the end, Google Keen both looks and operates a bit like the popular Pinterest service. When you sign up with your free Google account, all you have to do is type in a title. For example, you may be interested in the original Star Trek TV show. On both the Keen web site or via the web mobile app, just type in Star Trek The Original Series, and then tap or click on the Next box in the bottom right corner
You will then see a series of Google Search-related web links based on your title. Click or tap on the links that are closest to your interest. Finally, click or tap on the Create box, again in the bottom right corner.
You should see your newly created Keen page. Click on it and you will be taken to your main page. There are three tabs on your Keen page. The one that’s displayed first is Explore, where you can see the articles that are shown on your subject via a Google Search. There’s another tab called Gems, and each entry in the Explore page has a gem icon on it. Tap or click on the gems to save the articles you most want to access on your page. Finally, there’s a Searches tab, which allows you to add more search topics to your Keen page.
You can manually add new photos, links, or even texts on your Keen page via the Add button on top. You can also use the button to add more via search or you can add new sections to your Keen page. There’s also the Edit button, which allows you to add more collaborators to your page. Finally, there’s the Share button, which lets you send a link to your Keen page to anyone, or invite someone to access and add to the page.
One interesting think about this service is that it uses machine learning to offer up suggestions for new links and content for your page on a regular basis.
Will it last?
Google Keen is designed as an experiment, and it’s currently in its infancy. Many of the company’s Area 120 projects end up shutting down, although features from these projects sometimes show up in other products. It will be interesting to see if Keen will end up in its own stand-alone service, or if it will also be shut down.
Have you signed up for Keen, and if so what has your experience been like with the service?

Cendana Capital, which has been backing seed funds for a decade, has $278 million more to invest
When in 2010, former VC Michael Kim set out to raise a fund that he would invest in a spate of micro VC managers, the investors to which he turned didn’t get it. Why pay Kim and his firm, Cendana Capital, a management fee on top of the management fees that the VC managers themselves charge?
Fast forward to today, and Kim has apparently proven to his backers that he’s worth the extra cost. Three years after raising $260 million across a handful of vehicles whose capital he plugged into up-and-coming venture firms, Kim is now revealing a fresh $278 million in capital commitments, including $218 million for its fourth flagship fund, and $60 million that Cendana will be managing expressly for the University of Texas endowment.
We talked with Kim last week about how he plans to invest the money, which differs slightly from how he has invested in the past.
Rather than stick solely with U.S.-based seed-stage managers who are raising vehicles of $100 million or less, he will split Cendana into three focus areas. One of these will remain seed-stage managers. A smaller area of focus — but one of growing importance, he said — is pre-seed managers who are managing $50 million or less and mostly funding ideas (and getting roughly 15% of each startup in exchange for the risk).
A third area of growing interest is in international managers. In fact, Kim says Cendana has already backed small venture firms in Australia (Blackbird Ventures), China (Cherubic Ventures, which is a cross-border investor that is also focused on the U.S.), Israel (Entree Capital), and India (Saama Capital), among other spots.
Altogether, Cendana is now managing around $1.2 billion. For its services, it charges its backers a 1% management fee and 10% of its profits atop the 2.5% management fee and 20% “carried interest” that his fund managers collect.
“To be extremely clear about it and transparent,” said Kim, “that’s a stacked fee that’s on top of what our [VC] fund managers charge. So Cendana LPs are paying 3.5% and 30%.” One “might think that seems pretty egregious,” he continued. “But a number of our LPs are either not staffed to go address this market or are too large to actually write smaller checks to these seed funds. And we provide a pretty interesting value proposition to them.”
That’s particularly true, Kim argues, when contrasting Cendana with other, bigger fund managers.
“A lot of these well-known fund of funds are asset gatherers,” he says. “They’re not charging carried interest. They’re in it for the management fee. They have shiny offices around the world, they have hundreds of people working at them, they’re raising billion-dollar-plus kind of funds, and they’re putting 30 to 50 names into each one, so in a way they become index funds. [But[ I don’t think venture is really an asset class. Unlike an ETF that’s focused on the S&P 500, venture capital is where a handful of fund managers capture most of the alpha. Our differentiation is that we’re taking we’re creating very concentrated portfolios.”
Specifically, Cendana typically holds positions in up to 12 funds, plus makes $1 million bets on another handful of more nascent managers that it will fund further if they prove out their theses.
Some of the managers it has backed has outgrown Cendana from an assets standpoint. It caps its investments in funds that are $100 million or less in size.
But over time, it has backed 22 managers over the years. Among them: 11.2 Capital, Accelerator Ventures, Angular Ventures, Bowery Capital, Collaborative Fund, Forerunner Ventures, Founder Collective, Freestyle Capital, IA Ventures, L2 Ventures, Lerer Hippeau, MHS Capital, Montage Ventures, Moxxie Ventures, Neo, NextView Ventures, Silicon Valley Data Capital, Spider Capital, Susa Ventures, Uncork VC (when it was still SoftTech VC), Wave Capital and XYZ Ventures.
As for its pre-seed fund managers, Cendana is now the anchor investors in 10 funds, including Better Tomorrow Ventures, Bolt VC, Engineering Capital, K9 Ventures, Mucker Capital, Notation Capital, PivotNorth Capital, Rhapsody Venture Partners, Root Ventures, and Wonder Ventures.
As for its returns, Kim says that Cendana’s very first fund, a $28.5 million vehicle, is “marked at north of 3x” and “that’s net of everything.”
He’s optimistic that the firm’s numbers will look even better over time. According to Kim, Cendana currently has 38 so-called unicorns in its broader portfolio. It separately hold stakes in 160 companies that are valued at more than $100 million.

Facebook shuts down Hobbi, its experimental app for documenting personal projects
Facebook’s recently launched app, Hobbi, an experiment in short-form content creation around personal projects, hobbies, and other Pinterest-y content, is already shutting down. The app first arrived on iOS in February as one of now several launches from Facebook’s internal R&D group, the NPE Team.
Hobbi users have now been notified by way of push notification that the app is shutting down on July 10, 2020. The app allows users to export their data from its settings.
In the few months it’s been live on the U.S. App Store, Hobbi only gained 7,000 downloads, according to estimates from Sensor Tower. Apptopia also reported the app had under 10K downloads and saw minimal gains during May and June.
Though Hobbi clearly took cues from Pinterest, it was not designed to be a pinboard of inspirational ideas. Instead, Hobbi users would organize photos of their projects — like gardening, cooking, arts & crafts, décor, and more — in a visual diary of sorts. The goal was to photograph the project’s progress over time, adding text to describe the steps, as needed.
The end result would be a highlight reel of all those steps that could be published externally when the project was completed.
But Hobbi was a fairly bare bones app. There was nothing else to do but document your own projects. You couldn’t browse and watch projects other users had created, beyond a few samples, nor could you follow top users across the service. And even the tools for documentation were underdeveloped. Beyond a special “Notes” field for writing down a project’s steps, the app experience felt like a watered-down version of Stories.
![](https://techcrunch.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/hobbi-website.jpg?w=680)
Facebook wasn’t alone in pursuing the potential of short-form creative content. Google’s internal R&D group, Area 120, also published its own experiment in this area with the video app Tangi. And Pinterest was recently spotted testing a new version of Story Pins, that would allow users to showcase DIY and creative content in a similar way.
It’s not surprising to see Hobbi wind down so quickly, given its lack of traction. Facebook already said its NPE Team experiments would involve apps that changed very rapidly and would shut down if consumers didn’t find them useful.
In addition to Hobbi, the NPE Team has launched a number of apps since last summer, including meme creator Whale, conversational app Bump, music app Aux, couples app Tuned, Apple Watch app Kit, audio calling app CatchUp, collaborative music app Collab, live event companion Venue, and predictions app Forecast. Before Hobbi, the only one to have shut down was Bump. (Some are not live in the U.S., either.)
Of course, Facebook may not intend to use these experiments to create a set of entirely new social apps built from the ground-up. Instead, it’s likely looking to collect data about what features resonate with users and how different creation tools are used. This is data that can inform Facebook’s development of features for its main set of apps, like Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram.
We’ve reached out to Facebook for comment but one had not been provided at the time of publication.

Lyft’s self-driving test vehicles are back on public roads in California
Lyft’s self-driving vehicle division has restarted testing on public roads in California, several months after pausing operations amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Lyft’s Level 5 program said Tuesday some of its autonomous vehicles are back on the road in Palo Alto and at its closed test track. The company has not resumed a pilot program that provided rides to Lyft employees in Palo Alto.
The company said it is following CDC guidelines for personal protective equipment and surface cleaning. It has also enacted several additional safety steps to prevent the spread of COVID. Each autonomous test vehicle is equipped with partitions to separate the two safety operators inside, the company said. The operators must wear face shields and submit to temperature checks. They’re also paired together for two weeks at a time.
Lyft’s Level 5 program — a nod to the SAE automated driving level that means the vehicle handles all driving in all conditions — launched in July 2017 but didn’t starting testing on California’s public roads until November 2018. Lyft then ramped up the testing program and its fleet. By late 2019, Lyft was driving four times more autonomous miles per quarter than it was six months prior.
Lyft had 19 autonomous vehicles testing on public roads in California in 2019, according to the California Department of Motor Vehicles, the primary agency that regulates AVs in the state. Those 19 vehicles, which operated during the reporting period of December 2018 to November 2019, drove nearly 43,000 miles in autonomous mode, according to Lyft’s annual report released in February. While that’s a tiny figure when compared to other companies such as Argo AI, Cruise and Waymo, it does represent progress within the program.
Lyft has supplemented its on-road testing with simulation, a strategy that it relied on more heavily during COVID-related shutdowns. And it will likely continue to lean on simulation even as local governments lift restrictions and the economy reopens.
Simulation is a cost-effective way to create additional control, repeatability and safety, according to a blog post released Tuesday by Robert Morgan, director of engineering, and Sameer Qureshi, director of product management at Level 5. The pair said simulation has also allowed the Level 5 unit to test its work without vehicles, without employees leaving their desks and, for the last few months, without leaving their homes. Level 5 employs more than 400 people in London, Munich and the United States.
Using simulation in the development of autonomous vehicle technology is a well-established tool in the industry. Lyft’s approach to data — which it uses to improve its simulations — is what differentiates the company from competitors. Lyft is using data collected from drivers on its ride-hailing app to improve simulation tests as well as build 3D maps and understand human driving patterns.
The Level 5 program is taking data from select vehicles in Lyft’s Express Drive program, which provides rental cars and SUVs to drivers on its platform as an alternative to options like long-term leasing.

‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ will return to HBO for season 11

- HBO renewed Curb Your Enthusiasm for its eleventh season on Tuesday.
- Curb Your Enthusiasm debuted on HBO in 2000, and has run for 100 episodes. The show technically ended after the season eight finale, but David revived it with a ninth season six years later.
- Unsurprisingly, HBO didn't say anything about the release date for season eleven.
Curb Your Enthusiasm debuted on HBO nearly 20 years ago, and it might be another 20 years before it ends, as the network has renewed Larry David's long-running, loosely-scripted sitcom for an eleventh season.
Much like Seinfeld before it, Curb Your Enthusiasm has never been defined by plot, but over the years, David has tied a bow on a season in such a way that it could easily serve as a series finale. And yet he keeps coming back for more, as do his co-stars. Season ten, which began airing in January 2020, brought back Susie Essman, Jeff Garlin, Cheryl Hines, Richard Lewis, J.B. Smoove, and Ted Danson, along with plenty of cameo appearances. Presumably, most everyone will be back when the show returns, though HBO didn't offer a timeframe for its arrival.

![5G Verizon 5G Verizon](https://boygeniusreport.files.wordpress.com/2019/01/t-mobile-sign-2.jpg?quality=70&strip=all&w=610)
- With the iPhone 12 release a few months away, the market is about to be flooded with new 5G smartphones.
- A new report from Opensignal lays out which U.S. carrier delivers the fastest 5G speeds.
- Verizon came out on top in terms of raw speed, but limited availability makes T-Mobile's 5G network a better choice.
5G smartphones have been available for a few months, but they haven't exactly flooded the market just yet. This, of course, isn't all that surprising given that the first 5G smartphones arrived when 5G coverage was still spotty. Over the past few months, however, carriers across the board have done a solid job of boosting coverage across the country. And with Apple's iPhone 12 -- which will be the first iPhone to boast support for 5G -- the number of 5G-capable devices is poised to skyrocket come October.
In light of that, a new report from Opensignal finds that Verizon provides the faster 5G speeds than any other U.S. carrier. In fact, 5G speeds on Verizon were, at times, as much as ten times faster than what Opensignal saw on carriers like AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile.

No one is talking about one obstacle that may prolong the coronavirus pandemic
![Coronavirus vaccine Coronavirus vaccine](https://boygeniusreport.files.wordpress.com/2020/06/webp.net-resizeimage-36.jpg?quality=70&strip=all&w=610)
- At this point, it's hard to believe that we've been dealing with the coronavirus pandemic for almost half a year now in the US -- and the thing everyone is watching and hoping for next is whether or not a successful coronavirus vaccine arrives before the end of the year.
- Even if it does, though, White House advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci warned on Monday that won't by itself signal the end of the coronavirus pandemic.
- Right on cue, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates also said on Monday that he doesn't even think a coronavirus vaccine will arrive before the end of this year.
For a while now, many people have been recalibrating their expectations around how long the coronavirus pandemic will last -- with one health expert predicting it could linger for another 12 months -- based on the assumption that once a vaccine arrives, at that point the pandemic will be near an end. It's a milestone we're certainly getting closer to, with scientists also learning more and more about therapeutics that are and aren't effective against the virus.
Along those lines, however, we got a double-dose of somewhat gloomy prognostications on Monday (depending on how you look at them). First, an estimate that a successful vaccine probably won't arrive this year -- and then, even when it does, that still won't be enough by itself to get us out of this pandemic.

![](https://fdn.gsmarena.com/imgroot/news/20/06/redmi-8-android-10/-184x111/gsmarena_001.jpg)
Xiaomi is very busy with updates to the new MIUI 12 at this point, but the company is also still working on bringing some of its older phones up to Android 10. The latest model to receive an update with this version of the OS is the Redmi 8, launched last October with Android 9 Pie. The update to Android 10 doesn't take the Redmi 8 up to MIUI 12, there's probably going to be a subsequent release for that. So it's still on MIUI 11, version 11.0.1.0 QCNCNXM to be precise. Aside from the Android version bump, this update brings with it the June 2020 security patches, as well as the...

Radiation levels in Europe are rising, and nobody knows why
![radiation europe radiation europe](https://boygeniusreport.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/10547760k-e1581087500274.jpg?quality=70&strip=all&w=610)
- Radioactive material is drifting toward northern Europe from the direction of Russia, raising questions over the country's several nuclear power plants.
- Russia formally denied that anything was wrong, stating via its state-owned media agency that the reactors were working as intended.
- Russia's sketchy history with nuclear power and coverups has led to plenty of skepticism.
With nuclear power plants supplying some areas of the globe with power, keeping track of ambient radiation levels is vitally important to ensuring the safety of those near the plants as well as many miles away. A new report out of Norway suggests that something is amiss, with elevated levels of radioactivity in northern Europe being detected recent, but the source remains unknown.
Officials initially suspected some kind of change with a Russian power plant. Russia operates several nuclear power facilities, and at least two of them are close enough that they could be the source of the increased radioactivity levels. Russia, predictably, says everything is fine.

Puzzling study detects coronavirus in Spain wastewater from March 2019
![Coronavirus Testing Coronavirus Testing](https://boygeniusreport.files.wordpress.com/2020/05/coronavirus-covid-19-madrid-spain.jpg?quality=70&strip=all&w=610)
- A different type of coronavirus testing can help researchers determine when the novel virus arrived in a community.
- Researchers from Spain studied wastewater samples from Barcelona going back to January 2018 and found evidence of the novel coronavirus in samples from March 2019.
- The discovery is puzzling, given the characteristics of COVID-19 outbreaks. The highly contagious respiratory illness would have ravaged Barcelona several months before the Wuhan epidemic, but that did not happen.
The origins of the novel coronavirus are still a mystery, as China still hasn't revealed the source of the disease. A few weeks ago, officials from Wuhan went on record again to say the disease had not escaped from the infamous local lab, while others said the Wuhan market wasn't the place where it all started.
Separately, researchers from various countries have been able to prove that COVID-19 hit communities well before the first cases were officially confirmed by PCR tests. Doctors in France found patients that had COVID-19-like symptoms back in November 2019 and detected the virus in frozen samples from a different patient that was treated in a hospital for flu-like symptoms in late December 2019. Italian doctors said their first COVID-19 cases must have dated back to January, while other Italian researchers found coronavirus traces in wastewater from two major northern towns dating back to mid-December. US studies said the first COVID-19 patients may have been infected in late December, and that sustained community transmission had started even earlier than previous estimates. A different study that looked at mapping data for Wuhan hospitals found unusual parking lot activity in August and September of 2019.
All these pieces of evidence seem to suggest that the pandemic may have started spreading in Wuhan long before December. In fact, at the time, people in other countries were apparently already infected. But the most puzzling study to date reveals the coronavirus was present in wastewater in Barcelona, Spain dating back to March 2019.
