This might be the smartphone design to replace the notch in 2020
![Smartphone notch Smartphone notch](https://boygeniusreport.files.wordpress.com/2019/12/smartphone-mosaic-notch.jpg?quality=98&strip=all&w=610)
If there is one design feature that has defined the last few years of the smartphone industry, it has to be the notch. As phone makers continue to work their way to a legitimate bezel-less display, there have been bridges they have had to cross, and the notch we see on the iPhone X, XS, and 11 is one of them, while the Infinity-O hole of the Galaxy S10 and Note 10 is another. But a new upgrade may be just around the corner.
In the latest of his year-end leaks, Ice Universe has claimed that the next step after the hole-punch will be something called the "mosaic" design. Based on the images he shared, the mosaic display will feature a selfie camera beneath the screen, much like the ultrasonic fingerprint scanner on other modern devices.

![anti-vaccination ban anti-vaccination ban](https://boygeniusreport.files.wordpress.com/2019/01/9661398a.jpg?quality=98&strip=all&w=581)
A measles outbreak in the United States has been festering for some time, with some areas of the country seeing spikes in new cases, doctor visits, and even hospitalizations. There are a handful of areas in the northwest that have been hit the hardest, and Seattle's public school system has made the tough decision to actually ban students who have yet to be vaccinated against measles.
In the interest of public health and a desire to keep the school system from becoming a haven for the spread of measles, students who have not been immunized against measles are being asked to attend one of the free immunization clinics. Clinics are open Monday through Friday, offering plenty of opportunities for unvaccinated students to get the shots they need.

Of course AT&T is outsourcing thousands of jobs after getting a massive tax cut last year
![AT&T jobs AT&T jobs](https://boygeniusreport.files.wordpress.com/2019/11/webp.net-resizeimage-7.jpg?quality=98&strip=all&w=610)
It's bad enough that AT&T cut thousands of jobs (after promising to create thousands of new ones) despite saving a reported $3 billion thanks to the Trump tax cuts that were signed into law in December 2017. The carrier had pushed hard for the tax cuts, promising to invest an extra $1 billion in 2018 -- with CEO Randall Stephenson even touting that "every billion dollars AT&T invests is 7,000 hard-hat jobs." And he told CNBC the following, by way of continuing to make a public case for the tax cuts: "Lower taxes drives more investment, drives more hiring, drives greater wages. I know exactly what AT&T would do: We would invest more.”
Except -- well, not so much. Earlier this year, a Communications Workers of America analysis based on public financial statements revealed that "the telecom company eliminated 23,328 jobs since the Tax Cut and Jobs Act passed in late 2017, including nearly 6,000 in the first quarter of 2019." And that's not all. AT&T is also planning to lay off thousands of additional workers -- after they've first trained their own cheaper, foreign replacements, that is.

As far as wild Apple rumors are concerned, a new report claiming that Apple has plans to release a high-end gaming computer next year is a doozy.
The report originates from the Economic Daily News, which has something of a spotty track record when it comes to Apple rumors. The report specifically notes that Apple may launch a pricey $5,000 gaming Mac in 2020. Details are naturally quite murky, and the report isn't even sure if this rumored Mac will come in the form of an iMac or a high-end MacBook.

SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Crude oil smudges have been spotted at some Brazilian beaches in the northeast state of Ceará, the country's navy said on Monday, almost two months after the area was hit by another oil slick. That was part of a broader spill, whose origin remains a mystery, that stained hundreds of beaches on Brazil's northeast coast between September and November, threatening marine life, tourism and fishing. The navy said samples of the new spill were being sent for analysis to a marine studies institute, adding that sailors, volunteers, members of environmental agency IBAMA and others were recovering the oil traces from the beaches.

Google Maps quietly added a space feature that ‘Star Wars’ fans will love

As far as I'm concerned, Google Maps no longer provides merely a superior navigation experience compared to other maps applications out there. I've also found myself increasingly using it for all sorts of non-maps uses, such as calling up the phone number of a business and dialing from right within the app; scoping out images of a restaurant's top dishes; checking reviews of a business; and lots more.
Meanwhile, Google Maps is arguably so far ahead of many of its rivals that it's also got time to roll out totally useless new features -- but features that are fun, nevertheless, and even a bit whimsical. One such addition was spotted in recent days by an eagle-eyed Redditor and will no doubt be appreciated by fans of Star Wars.

The five biggest rounds in tech in 2019 and what they mean
Funding for tech startups has been on an inevitable upswing for years, a result of a virtuous circle where wildly successful tech companies on the public markets whet the appetites of investors and investors’ backers to find more diamonds, a push met by a pull from the rush of talent with entrepreneurial aspirations out to put that money to work. 2019 has felt a bumper year in that longer trend, with 9-figure rounds ($100 million or more) and “unicorn” statuses so prevalent that the numbers have started to cease to be news items in themselves.
With 2020 now just days away, a look at the 50 biggest funding rounds for start-ups in the past year draw out some trends. We’re pulling out the top five below for a closer look, but it’s interesting too to see some of the other trends emerging across the rest of the pack.
Automotive remains a huge pull when it comes to raising big bucks: part of the reason is because the space is capital intensive, as it straddles both software and hardware (that is, not just equipment but cars). Capex is another reason for some of the other big investment rounds of the year, such as the biggest of them all, for an internet data center startup.
Asian companies figure massive in the list, and account for 7 of the 10 biggest rounds in the list.
Small players: there were only three companies in health tech in the top 50, only one in education technology, and only three in the areas of AI and robotics. I don’t know if that means these areas simply don’t require as much capital investment, or if these challenges are simply not as interesting right now for investors as those more squarely focused on revenue generation and business needs. Hopefully the former, as the wider tech world faces a lot of cynicism and skepticism from the public, and could use a better profile from solving actual problems.
Note: for this piece we have focused on investments made in pre-IPO technology companies, and on new equity investments rather than secondary or debt rounds.

Why Baby Yoda both makes and ruins ‘The Mandalorian’
![Star Wars Baby Yoda Star Wars Baby Yoda](https://boygeniusreport.files.wordpress.com/2019/11/baby-yoda.jpg?quality=98&strip=all&w=610)
The first season of The Mandalorian is over, and the finale was quite enjoyable, delivering on all accounts. There’s plenty of action, character development, and humor, a few exciting twists, and Baby Yoda, of course, all under Taika Waititi’s brilliant directing. And, as expected, there's going to be at least one more season on Disney+ that will further explore this post-Return of the Jedi time period in Star Wars history.
But as successful as this season of the first live-action Star Wars TV series might have been, I’m sad to say that Baby Yoda ruins it just as much as the character makes the show worth watching. Mind you, there will be some spoilers about the series in what’s about to follow, as well as a few The Rise of Skywalker spoilers.

If you’re a traveler like me, you’re less loyal to one specific airline brand than to the best, lowest fare you can get among a small handful of favored alines. Trouble is, bouncing around between different airlines can make it such that obtaining a specific airline’s credit card -- with the attendant fees that come with it -- might not make it worth your while, the way it would if you were a more loyal, exclusive flyer.
My preferred credit card offers a solid mix of ongoing benefits and cash value, as well as a solid sign-up bonus. It’s certainly easy to find branded airline cards that fit this bill, but if you’re like me and not particularly loyal to any single one, in this case your best bet might be something like the Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card, which offers loads of ways to save money and earn rewards to more than pay for earning a spot in your wallet. Rewards like miles now transferable to airline partners and a 2x earning rate on everyday spending.
