PlayStation Plus free games

While it doesn't hold a candle to the killer selection of free games Xbox One owners are getting in August, the lineup of PlayStation Plus free games for next month is nothing to sneeze at. If you subscribe to PlayStation Plus, you'll get both the triplet of futuristic racing games in the WipEout Omega Collection (which has a VR mode too) and Sniper Elite 4, which got solid reviews when it launched back in 2017.

PM Johnson faces first electoral test in vote for Welsh parliamentary seat

No comments :

By Kylie MacLellan LONDON (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Boris Johnson could see his working majority in parliament reduced to just one when voters in a rural Welsh parliamentary seat go to the polls on Thursday in his first electoral test as leader. The pro-European Union Liberal Democrats are the bookmakers' favourites to win the vote in Brecon and Radnorshire, triggered when Conservative lawmaker Chris Davies was ousted by a petition of constituents after being convicted of falsifying expenses. Brecon is a region where sheep outnumber people many times over and where the prospect of steep EU tariffs being slapped on its Welsh lamb exports in a no-deal Brexit have prompted widespread concern among farmers

Apple and Samsung phone sales are down, and $1,000+ prices are one reason why

No comments :
Apple vs Samsung

There was at least one common theme reflected in the earnings that handset arch-rivals Apple and Samsung both reported this week - declines in revenue attributable to both companies’ pricey smartphones.

Apple, for its part, no longer breaks out unit sales anymore but did disclose a decline in iPhone revenue Tuesday of 12% compared to the same quarter in 2018. The iPhone maker generated $25.99 billion in revenue from the smartphone during its most recent fiscal quarter, down from a little more than $29 billion in the year-ago period. At Samsung, the story was similar.

Oklahoma makes final bid to hold J&J responsible for opioid epidemic

No comments :

By Nate Raymond (Reuters) - Oklahoma's attorney general on Wednesday made his final bid to force Johnson & Johnson to pay $17 billion for its part in fuelling the opioid epidemic, saying the drugmaker's "egregious" marketing caused an oversupply of addictive drugs and overdose deaths. Attorney General Mike Hunter in a brief filed in a state court in Norman, Oklahoma, argued that evidence presented during the first trial nationally in litigation over the epidemic showed J&J was "at the root of this crisis." The state's lawyers said evidence presented during the seven-week trial that began in May showed J&J's decades-long marketing campaign convinced doctors and the public that opioids could be a "go-to, first-line treatment for everything from headaches to sprained ankles." They said J&J and its subsidiaries "abandoned all standards of responsible conduct in their blind resolve to make money from their drugs," creating a public nuisance in the form of an opioid crisis that since 2000 has killed 6,000 Oklahomans.

Xbox Games with Gold for August adds ‘Forza 6’ and ‘Gears of War 4’

No comments :
Xbox Games with Gold

It appears that Microsoft heard me whining about the recent output of free games on both Xbox One and PS4, as the August selection for Games with Gold is the best I've seen in ages. As this console generation begins to wind down, Microsoft has made two of its best exclusive titles free for the month of August. The first -- Gears of War 4 -- is my favorite game in the series, and the second -- Forza 6 -- is an incredible racing game.

Those two titles honestly would have been plenty, but the classic dungeon crawler Torchlight is being given away too, as is the underrated Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, which hit the Xbox 360 way back in 2010.

Apple once again proves Tim Cook’s plan to deal with slowing iPhone sales is paying off

No comments :
Apple services revenue

In a rundown Tuesday afternoon of his company’s performance over the most recent fiscal third quarter, Apple CEO Tim Cook accentuated the positives despite the ho-hum nature of the three-month period. The quarter just before summer begins, for example, doesn’t include the busy holiday shopping season or a back-to-school rush for devices. Nevertheless, this is a publicly-traded company, presenting its results to Wall Street on a three-month cycle, and as such analysts and investors expect to see as many improvements as possible each time new earnings are presented.

But how do you satisfy the Street's expectation that public companies always show growth when, in Apple's case, the company's signature product has matured -- to the point that Apple has made clear the iPhone will no longer generate the sizzling, white-hot sales numbers it once did? Apple's latest earnings tell the story.

Snapchat trolls Instagram with 'real friends' ad campaign

No comments :
TwitterFacebook

Snapchat is finally growing again, and it's using that momentum to engage in some (not so) subtle trolling of its biggest rival: Instagram.

Snap introduced a new ad campaign that's all about promoting Snapchat as the home for "real friends." The implications, of course, being that other platforms aren't about "real friends." Think that's too subtle? Well, just in case there was any question of what they really meant, Snap kicked off the campaign. on none other than Instagram.

Snap doesn't have its own presence on Instagram, so it worked with dozens of "quotefluencers" — high-profile accounts that primarily post inspirational quotes. Together, these accounts flooded Instagram with cheery quotes about friends using the "#realfriends" and "#friendshipquotes" hashtags. The posts were all on a yellow background, complete with Snapchat's ghost logo and "brought to you by Snapchat" captions. Read more...

The saddest movies on Netflix

No comments :
Schindler's list - Saddest movies on Netflix

Image via IMDB.

Whether it’s a cartoon classic, quirky indie film, or uproarious comedy, everyone loves a feel-good movie, but sometimes it’s just not what you want. Sometimes you want something glum, something dark, something sad. Netflix has a great selection of all kinds of movies, and plenty of it is perfect for when all you want is to sit in the dark and really stew in it. Here are some of the saddest movies on Netflix right now.

Saddest movies on Netflix:

  1. Schindler’s List
  2. Roma
  3. The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
  4. Tallulah
  1. Paddleton
  2. Okja
  3. A Silent Voice

Editor’s note: This list will be updated as sad movies leave and other new arrivals debut on Netflix.

1. Schindler’s List

Schindler's List - Saddest movies on Netflix

image via IMDB.

This is probably the saddest movie on Netflix, and maybe one of the saddest movies of all time. Schindler’s List focuses on the true story of Oskar Schindler (Liam Neeson), a German businessman who used his factory to employ and eventually smuggle 1,200 Jews out of a concentration camp during the Holocaust.

Directed by Steven Spielberg, and featuring fantastic performances from Neeson, as well Ben Kingsley and Ralph Fiennes, this black and white classic will have you bawling by the end.

2. Roma

Roma - Saddest movies on Netflix.

Written, produced, shot, edited, and directed by Gravity director Alfonso Cuaron, Roma follows indigenous Mexican live-in maid Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio). Living and working in the affluent Colonia Roma neighborhood of Mexico City, Cleo struggles to navigate the strained relationships of the family she works for and the rising class tension in the region, all while dealing with an unplanned pregnancy to boot.

Throughout the movie Cleo is hit with one hardship after another. The results sometimes are life affirming, but this is still one of the saddest films on Netflix.

3. The Boy in The Striped Pyjamas

The boy in the striped pyjamas - saddest movies on netflix

Image via IMDB.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas tells the story of two boys, one the child a Nazi officer overseeing a concentration camp during World War II, and the other a Jewish child imprisoned in the camps.

The movie runs a pretty serious risk of equivocating the experiences of the victims of the Holocaust with those of its perpetrators (which, uh, yikes), but it still offers a pretty compelling look at how inflicting harm can cause both expected and unexpected trauma. On top of that, the ending twist is so sad it borders on emotionally manipulative.

This is definitely the weaker of the two Holocaust films on this list, but if you’re in for something sad, this’ll get the job done.

4. Tallulah

Tallulah - saddest movies on Netflix

Image via IMDB.

This comedy-drama focuses on Tallulah (Ellen Page), a homeless teenager who steals a baby from an alcoholic mother, and uses it to ingratiate herself into the life of her ex-boyfriend’s mother, Margo (Allison Janney).

This awkward film skillfully walks the line between comedy and tragedy. Sometimes it’s a heartwarming look at an increasingly dysfunctional family, other times it’s one of the saddest movies on Netflix.

Either way, you’re in for tremendous performances from Janney and Page.

5. Paddleton

Paddleton - best indie movies on Netflix.

Image via IMDB.

Paddleton follows neighbors and best friends Michael (Mark Duplass) and Andy (Ray Romano), as they come to grips with Michael’s diagnosis of terminal cancer.

The film takes place over the few days after Michael decides not to seek treatment and instead take medication that will end his own life. Much of the story finds the two watching kung-fu movies, making pizza, and fighting over Michael’s decision.

It’s a touching and heartbreaking story of friendship and loss, full of all the inside jokes and habits that accumulate when two people have been friends for years. It’s without a doubt one of Netflix’s saddest comedies, let alone one of Netflix’s saddest movies.

6. Okja

Okja - saddest movies on netflix

Okja is rather perplexing to categorize. The Korean-American Netflix original from director Bong Joon-ho follows Mija (Ahn Seo-hyun), a young girl chasing her best friend across South Korea and eventually the world after she is kidnapped by a multinational corporation. If that sounds too mundane, Mija’s best friend is a genetically modified giant pig named Okja, bred specifically to be a new form of livestock.

This movie takes tragic, comic, horrific turns in equal measure, and it can shift in tone dramatically quicker and more skillfully than just about any other film. At some moments it’s one of the saddest movies on Netflix, at others it’s one of the most absurd. At the center of it all is a star turn from Seo-hyun, backed by oddball supporting performances from Tilda Swinton, Paul Dano, and Steven Yeun.

7. A Silent Voice

A Silent Voice - saddest movies on Netflix

Image via IMDB.

Based on a manga series of the same name, A Silent Voice is the follow-up anime feature from the creators of smash hit Your Name. The film follows depressed high school pariah Shoya as he tries to make amends to Shoko, a deaf girl he mercilessly bullied in elementary school. Shoya has lived with the guilt of his actions for years, and after a failed suicide attempt he decides to seek redemption.

A Silent Voice is a coming of age story about dealing with and accepting guilt, and the unintended consequences of casual cruelty children subject each other to. Don’t let its colorful art style fool you, this is easily one of the saddest movies on Netflix.

That’s it for our list of the best sad movies on Netflix. There are tons of other great options if you’re looking for more melodramatic stuff, but this should be a good start. Have fun (if you can)!

Drone crash near kids leads Swiss Post and Matternet to suspend autonomous deliveries

No comments :

A serious crash by a delivery drone in Switzerland have grounded the fleet and put a partnership on ice. Within a stone’s throw of a school, the incident raised grim possibilities for the possibilities of catastrophic failure of payload-bearing autonomous aerial vehicles.

The drones were operated by Matternet as part of a partnership with the Swiss Post (i.e. the postal service), which was using the craft to dispatch lab samples from one medical center for priority cases. As far as potential applications of drone delivery, it’s a home run — but twice now the craft have crashed, first with a soft landing and the second time a very hard one.

The first incident, in January, was the result of a GPS hardware error; the drone entered a planned failback state and deployed its emergency parachute, falling slowly to the ground. Measures were taken to improve the GPS systems.

The second failure in May, however, led to the drone attempting to deploy its parachute again, only to sever the line somehow and plummet to earth, crashing into the ground some 150 feet from a bunch of kindergartners. No one was hit but this narrowly avoided being a worst-case scenario for the service: not just a craft failing, but the emergency systems failing as well, and over not just a populated area but immediately over a bunch of children. The incident was documented last month but not widely reported.

Falling from a few hundred feet, the 12-kilogram (about 26 pounds) drone and payload could easily have seriously injured or even killed someone — this is why there are very strict regulations about flying over populated areas and crowds.

Obviously they grounded the fleet following this incident and will not spin up again until Matternet addresses the various issues involved. How was it even possible, for instance, that the parachute line was capable of being cut by something on the drone?

In a statement to IEEE Spectrum, which recently noted the news stateside, Matternet said that it “had never seen a failure like that in the past, neither in our expensive (sic) testing nor in commercial operations.” (Presumably they meant extensive.) The company issued a slightly different statement to TechCrunch:

This is the first time ever that our vehicle parachute system has failed. As stated in the report, the flight termination system was triggered nominally per the drone’s specification, but the parachute cord was severed during the parachute deployment.

At Matternet, we take the safety of our technology and operations extremely seriously. A failure of the parachute safety mechanism system is unacceptable and we are taking all the appropriate measures to address it.

Swiss Post and Matternet reacted to the incident immediately by grounding all the operations involving this vehicle type. Our experts analyzed the incident and proposed the appropriate mitigations which are being evaluated by FOCA. We will restart operations once Matternet and Swiss Post, FOCA and our hospital customers in Switzerland are satisfied that the appropriate mitigations have been applied.

Drone delivery is a promising field, but situations like this one don’t do it any favors when regulators take a look. Despite sunny predictions from the industry, there is a huge amount of work yet to be done in terms of flight proving the technology, and although 2 failures out of some 3,000 may not sound like a lot, if one of those failures is an uncontrolled fall that nearly takes out some kids, that could set the entire industry back.

Watch Japan’s asteroid probe touch down on asteroid Ryugu

No comments :
asteroid touchdown

Japanese space agency JAXA has had an up-close-and-personal relationship with the asteroid known as Ryugu ever since its Hayabusa-2 spacecraft entered orbit around the space rock in June of last year. The probe shot two separate projectiles at the asteroid and successfully snagged a pair of material samples. Its most recent (and daring) maneuver was carried out on July 11th, and now we have video from the probe showing how things played out.

The strategy was simple: blow a hole in Ryugu to obtain pristine samples of the material that rests just beneath the asteroid's surface. Actually setting down on the asteroid to grab the sample, however, is easier said than done. Thankfully, JAXA and its trust spacecraft pulled it off.

No comments :

Xiaomi's Mi Mix 3 5G is one of the first 5G capable devices to hit carriers in Europe left and right, and clearly its successor is already in the works. In fact, the upcoming Mi Mix 4 5G may have already been certified by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). A new Xiaomi handset, with the model number M1908F1XE, has been spotted on the MIIT website. It has 5G connectivity. While the listing doesn't call out the fact that it's the Mi Mix 4 5G in any way, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun has previously revealed that a new 5G device is coming in the second half of the year. And...

Huawei planned to sell a Google Assistant smart speaker in the US before getting banned

No comments :
Huawei ban

The consequences of the US ban of Huawei products have actually been more far-reaching than previously realized, according to a new report Monday that makes clear Huawei had been working with Google for more than a year on a smart speaker that would have been Huawei's first to include the Google Assistant. That is until the ban forced work on the device, which would have been sold in the US later this year, to suddenly come to a halt.
